Time to look at the GA-2 candidates

I am a bit of a political junkie.  I’m trying to curb my enthusiasm, but that is hard.  The political season is about to heat up with Super Tuesday now behind us.  Two Tuesdays ago, the SWGA Patriots hosted the first debate for the candidates running on the Republican ticket to unseat Democrat Congressman Sanford Bishop in Georgia’s 2nd Congressional District.

There are three candidates vying for the position.  Rick Allen and John House are both from the Columbus area and Ken Deloach is from the Macon area.  Deloach is a Senior Pastor at Bread of Life Worship Center.  A section of Bibb county was drawn into the district recently and Thomas county was drawn out.  After meeting Ken Deloach just before the debate, a gentleman behind me shook his hand and welcomed him to the 2nd District.  Deloach said something about the fluid nature of boundary lines which are always changing.  I figured that the reference was due to the recent addition of part of Bibb county to the district.  I later learned in the debate that Deloach lives about 800 yards from the district line.  He explained that living in the district is not a prerequisite for serving as a congressman.  The only requirement, according to Deloach, is to live within the state.  Immediately I saw a red flag.  It may not be against the law for him to run and serve the 2nd District, but it will be hard to vote for a candidate when Bishop is running ads that Deloach doesn’t even reside in the district.

Another candidate is John House.  House is a retired US Army Colonel.  In the debate, House said that his military background would help him to win the vote of the veteran community as well as those working on the two bases in our area along with their families.  House was very well spoken.  He said that he formally announced his intentions to run in January and he already has very nice handouts, yard signs, etc.  He has also secured the endorsement of Mike Keown who lost the election to Congressman Bishop by a narrow margin.  House had a video crew taping the debate.  While I cannot confirm it, I can assume that John House is favored by the Republican establishment.

The final candidate running is Rick Allen.  If you want a candidate that talks about the Founding Fathers and American Exceptionalism, Allen is your candidate.  He narrowly lost the Republican nomination to Mike Keown, but he entered the race very late two years ago.  This time he says that he wants to finish what he started in the previous campaign.  Allen is president of Vita-RX which is a distributer of medical supplies.  He brings the small business owner perspective to the table as well as a special knowledge about the new healthcare legislation.  Allen was well spoken too during the debate and it appeared that he was the only one that made notes when the other candidates spoke.  He even referenced his notes to the moderator when he was accidentally passed over for a question.

Right now, all of the attention is being focused on the Presidential race.  I suspect that will be the case until the Republican party finds a candidate.  However, our problems in southwest Georgia can be turned around with the proper local leadership.  It is not too early to start looking at the candidates that want to be your next Congressman.  Visit their web sites, shake their hands, look them in the eye.  After all, they want to represent you.  www.rickallenforcongress.com, www.johnhouse.us, www.deloachforgeorgia.com

Allen to challenge Bishop

Rick Allen explains his reasons in an exclusive announcement interview with The Albany Journal

Written by Tom Knighton

Rick Allen came late to the party.  That was the essential verdict of everyone who looked at the Georgia Second’s Republican primary.  Allen entered the race late and never could catch up with eventual winner Mike Keown, who went on to lose to Representative Sanford Bishop. However, Allen did earn a great deal of respect from area Republicans.

That respect turned to enthusiasm as Allen announced to supporters via email that he was going to run again.

Social media sites had numerous people expressing their pleasure that the business owner from Columbus was coming back into the political arena.  Allen himself feels that he could have had a better showing last time around had he entered the race sooner. “I got into the race very late last time, in mid March I believe. Mike Keown was running a strong race with a lot of support and funding already in place. Mike had already been campaigning seven months when I came into the race. As a political novice I had a lot of ground to make up in a short time,” Allen said.

So why run this time? One local report describes Allen’s defeat in the primary as him being “crushed”, so why run again?

“More than anything I believe our Country is heading into national decline at an alarming rate, and I am very passionate about standing with other patriots to stop this decline. I’m also running because Georgia District Two needs a strong conservative voice in Washington,” Allen said.

Allen has already come out swinging against Bishop, who is currently seeking his 11th term in the House of Representatives. “We are currently represented by a pawn of the Obama Administration, which has shown itself to be the most radical, leftist and ineffective Presidency in US history. Sanford Bishop’s tenure in the Second District has sewn a path of corruption and his actions and voting record endorse a Democrat Party agenda which is leading us headlong into big government European style socialism and class warfare, which voters of the Georgia Second do not want, and will hasten our downfall as a nation,” said Allen.

Allen says his platform will include specific positions on overturning President Obama’s healthcare reform law, cutting spending, cutting the national debt, and a push for a balanced budget amendment. In addition, Allen says he will also campaign on the idea of American Exceptionalism.

“My campaign platform will center on the idea of American exceptionalism. That is that we are the exception to the history and condition of man, in that we are the first serious country to prove that man can govern himself, without a powerful governmental authority, dictating and controlling every facet of human activity. Along with our Founding Fathers, I believe we are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights, and that it is the responsibility of the Government to protect these rights, and our liberty is best served when government is limited. I will also stress the ideals of self reliance, individual liberty, fiscal responsibility, the restoration of traditional American values, and a strong national defense,” Allen said in an email to The Albany Journal.

Allen’s fight is bound to be uphill.  Redistricting efforts to protect Congressman Austin Scott has created a strong Democrat leaning district in the Second District, with now parts of Macon as part of the district.  However, it was thought that Bishop was fairly safe at this point in the last election, only to have a strong challenge from Keown that nearly toppled the long time Congressman.

Sources also indicate that Lee Ferrell, who finished third in the last election behind Keown and Allen, is planning on running as well.

Bishop Tackles Federal Budget Deficit with Albany Residents

Nearly 100 Albany residents tried their hand at balancing the federal budget tonight during a deficit reduction workshop held by Representative Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02). The bi-partisan Concord Coalition helped organize the event at Albany Technical College, which put people into groups of five to ten and asked them to work together and act as their own budget committee.

“We cannot continue financing the government on a credit card, and after the town hall meeting tonight it is clear to me that the American people want those days to come to an end,” said Rep. Bishop. “The current federal debt and budget deficit is simply unsustainable, and after years of uncontrolled borrowing and spending, we need to find solutions and stop kicking the can down the road.”

The Concord Coalition is a nationwide, non-partisan, grassroots organization dedicated to educating the public about the causes and consequences of federal budget deficits. During similar town hall events across the country, participants used their “Principles and Priorities Workbook” to examine a variety of spending and revenue options and decide which options are the fairest and most effective way to balance the federal budget.

Rep. Bishop is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition of fiscally responsible Democrats who are working to find a responsible framework to reduce spending, pay down the debt and balance the budget. With the nation focused on the huge fiscal challenges facing the United States, Rep. Bishop wanted to hear directly from local residents about their concerns and listen to their potential solutions.

“Getting our fiscal house in order is a huge task that will require making hard decisions about our nation’s priorities,” said Rep. Bishop. “We are at a moment of truth. We must not place the burden of our fiscal irresponsibility on the backs of our children and grandchildren. I am going to take the solutions I heard tonight back to Washington, share them with my colleagues, and start working immediately to solve this crisis.
