The shame is that this is news

By   /  July 3, 2012  /  Outlook  /  Comments Off

Tom Knighton 2

Tweet       News broke Monday that a new employer was coming to town, bringing 112 new jobs to Albany.  This is great news for a community.  I applaud the Economic Development Commission, who is apparently at least partially responsible for this.  Unfortunately, 112 jobs shouldn’t even be news.

The disposable culture

Tom Knighton

Tweet     For all the talk in some circles about a culture war, many people don’t really understand that.  I’ll be honest, I have only a vague understanding of what some people mean by “culture war”.  However, there is a way I describe our culture and I think does deserve a war against: Our [...]

Mayor Hubbard: Oblivious to reality

By   /  June 19, 2012  /  Outlook  /  Comments Off

Tweet     Recently, Mayor Dorothy Hubbard was quoted as saying that during her campaign to be mayor, she heard nothing about crime being an issue.  “I didn’t hear that crime was a major issue. The number one issue was education.” It leads me to asking the question, “Where the heck has she been?”

Defending Sacrifice

Tweet       This week, we mourn two from our area who were lost to violent acts half a world apart.  One is my dear friend Kimberly Layfield, who fell victim to a madman’s rampage in Seattle.  The other is United States Marine LCPL Steve Sutton. Over the weekend, reports surfaced that a notorious [...]

Mayor’s call just smoke and mirrors

By   /  June 5, 2012  /  Outlook  /  Comments Off

Tom Knighton

Tweet     Last week, Mayor Dorothy Hubbard issued a “service challenge” to the people of Albany.  On the surface, she’s saying things that should seem like common sense.  Clearly, city officials can’t do it all.  They need help from the community as a whole.  What isn’t so clear is that while officials like Hubbard [...]

The idiocy must end

By   /  May 22, 2012  /  Outlook  /   Comments

tomknighton-206x300

Tweet       It’s past time for the idiocy in the Dougherty County School System to come to an abrupt and sudden end.  In recent weeks, we’ve had a whistle-blower program that’s all but guaranteed to eliminate legitimate whistleblowing, a school system that pays the bond for a student arrest on school grounds, an [...]

School choice would actually fix DCSS

By   /  May 14, 2012  /  Outlook  /   Comments

tomknighton-206x300

Tweet     I know it may seem counter intuitive to many.  How can we fix the Dougherty County School System by doing the very thing many argue would destroy the system?  Well, it’s not particularly difficult, but we first must understand a couple of things. The first thing to keep in mind is that [...]

Six months of adventure

By   /  May 8, 2012  /  Outlook  /  Comments Off

tomknighton-206x300

Tweet     It’s now been six months since I took over the Albany Journal.  I’ve had a lot of folks ask me what it’s been like, so I thought I would take this auspicious occasion to share what it’s been like to sit at the helm of a paper like this. First, let me [...]

On positive and negative comments

By   /  May 1, 2012  /  Outlook  /  Comments Off

tomknighton-206x300

Tweet       There are a lot of people out there who believe that “negative” comments about Albany hurt our community. I recently had a friend on Facebook say as much. As someone who can be pretty critical of our local government, I felt it important to address this just a bit. First, let [...]

Another take on Lon’s column

By   /  April 24, 2012  /  Outlook  /  Comments Off

tomknighton-206x300

Tweet     Lon McNeil certainly stirred up something with his column two weeks ago where he asked if Albany’s problem was Leesburg.  Here at the Journal offices, we have received a significant amount of communication from folks regarding that column. It’s seemed that no matter where I go, as soon as people find out [...]
