LCpl Steven Sutton, U.S.M.C., 24

LCpl Steven Sutton, U.S.M.C., 24 of Jacksonville, N.C., formerly of Leesburg, died Saturday May 26, 2012 in the line of duty in the Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

His funeral service will be Wednesday, June 6, 2012 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Leesburg with interment in Crown Hill Cemetery with full Military Honors.  The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 5, 2012 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Kimbrell-Stern Funeral Directors.

Born in Tifton, LCpl Sutton grew up in Lee County and graduated from Lee County in 2007 where he played varsity football.  He was a HERO to his wife, daughter and family and was known as a “Gentle Giant” and a great friend.  He loved life, hunting and fishing.

LCpl Sutton joined the U. S. Marine Corps in 2009 and was attached to the 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment of the 2nd Marine Division.

Survivors include his wife Toni Senn Sutton, Leesburg; daughter Aubrey Smith, Leesburg; Gene Sutton and wife Bonnie, Leesburg; mother Sue Etheridge, Sylvester; brother, Jack Sutton, Carson City, Nv., Ches Balentine, Sylvester; sister, Nicki Tyre, Tallahassee, Fla.; grandparents, Bobbi Ford, Leesburg, Nell Rugg, Isabella, father and mother in law, Donny and Celia Senn, Leesburg; brother in law, Wadon Senn, Leesburg.

Kimberly (Kim) Layfield, 38

Kimberly (Kim) Layfield, 38, of Seattle, Wash., formerly of Albany, died May 30, 2012.  Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11a.m. at Mathews Funeral Home.  Dr. Jeffery Spicer will officiate.  Interment will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery

A native of Albany, Kim grew up on Nelms Road and graduated from Riverview Academy in 1992.  She lived in Vermont before moving to Seattle ten years ago.  Kim was a dental assistant and was formerly employed with Roosevelt Dental Center.  She was an organ donor, a member of the First Southern Methodist Church of Albany and the 35th Street Acting Group.

Survivors include her parents, Carol and Roy Layfield, a brother, Michael Layfield, her maternal grandmother, Freda Cochran and her paternal grandmother, Myrtle Layfield all of Putney, Ga., two aunts and two uncles, Sheilah Holland and her husband, Joey of Baconton, Ga., Anita Mathis of Albany, and Earl Layfield of Putney, Ga.

The family will receive friends Monday from 6 p.m. until 8p.m. at Mathews Funeral Home.

Tillie Marvette Hunt, 88,

Tillie Marvette Hunt, 88, of Albany died May, 31 2012 at Palmyra Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, June 4, 2012, at Mathews Funeral Home. Rev. Byron Miller will officiate.  Interment at Floral Memory Gardens with Military Honors

A native of Henry County, Ala., Mr. Hunt had resided in Albany since 1960 moving from Donalsonville, Ga. He was a retired Foreman with Georgia Pacific Paper Company, a WWII Army Veteran, and a member of VFW Post 2785 and was a member of Albany Christian Church. Mr. Hunt was preceded in death by his parents, Tillie Jay Hunt and Ethel Mae Mimms Hunt, a son, Thomas Marvette Hunt.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Hunt of Albany; two daughters, Beverly (Robert) Fowler and Sheila Hunt all of Albany; three sons, John (Marlene) Hunt of Oklahoma City, Okla., Ricky (Sherrie) Hunt and Donald Hunt all Of Leesburg, Ga.; three sisters, Dorothy Campbell of Columbus, Ga., Faye Olive of Anderson, S.C. and Sybil Burke of Donalsonville, Ga.; thirteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the residence of, Beverly and Robert Fowler, 324 Mud Creek Road, Albany, Ga. 31721.

James M. Williams, 64

James M. Williams, 64 of S. County Line Road in Albany died May28, 2012 at Phoebe Putney memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held Thursday at Kimbrell-Stern. Rev. Steve Hurley officiated. Interment followed in Floral Memory Gardens.

A native of Medart, Fla., Mr. Williams has lived in Albany area since 1958. He was of the Baptist faith and was retired from Brashear’s Steel and Enco Materials after 31 years of service. Mr. Williams loved wood working, carving and will always be remembered for the love he gave to his family.

Survivors include his wife , Betty Williams of Albany, daughter, Penny Harrell of Albany, grandchildren, James L. Barwick III, Brittany Pate and Tiffany Parrish all of Albany, great-grandchildren, Lakyn and Trevor Pate of Albany, sisters, Lacey Sanders of Crawfordville, Fla., Shirley Medders of Atlanta, Texas, Mary Davis, Agnes Davis and Darlene Abney all of Albany.

Joseph Centel Lawson, 18

Joseph Centel Lawson, 18, of Wingate, N.C., formerly of Albany, died Saturday, May 23, 2012, at Coffee Regional Hospital. Funeral services were conducted Friday at Mathews Funeral Home. Rev. Mary Hampton officiated. Interment followed in Crown Hill Cemetery.

A native of Albany, Mr. Lawson had resided in Wingate, N.C. for the past eighteen months moving from Albany. He was a welder with Southern Fabricators and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his parents, David and Rebecca Haynes, Wingate, N.C., three brothers, William Louis Haynes, Hazlehurst, Ga., Joseph Emanuel Haynes, Douglas, Ga., Brandon Porter, Unadilla, Ga., three sisters, Danielle Hughes and Brooke Mills both of Marshville, N.C., Brandi Nicole Porter, Wingate, N.C., maternal grandparents, Jerry and Sandra Scott, Albany, paternal grandmother, Joan Hampton and paternal great-grandmother, Rev. Earnest Clyde Frazier, 69

Earnest Clyde Frazier, 69, of Albany died May 28, 2012 at his residence.  Funeral services were held Thursday at Mathews Funeral Home.  Rev. Ralph Harrell officiated.  Interment followed in Crown Hill Cemetery.

A native of Moultrie, Ga., Clyde’s family moved to Sylvester, Ga. when he was in the 10th grade and he graduated from Sylvester High School in 1960.  He served his country from 1964 until 1966 in the United States Army, afterwards moving to Albany.

Clyde was employed with Pritchett Ford Company for twenty two years as their parts manager and was general manager of D&D Enterprises (Auto Air of Macon) for 14 years.  He, along with his sons, opened and operated Frazier & Sons from 2003 until February 2012.  Clyde was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Cairo, Ga. and was a Master Mason and member of Worth Masonic Lodge # 194 F&AM.

Survivors include his fiancée, Patsy (Pat) Walters Carmichael of Albany, his children, Scott Frazier and his wife, Belinda and Michele Frazier Rodefer all of Leesburg, Ga., Brian Frazier and his wife, Stacey of Warner Robins, Ga. and David Frazier of Albany, a brother, Jerry Frazier and his wife, Glenda of Cairo, Ga. and his grandchildren, Samantha Frazier and Braden Frazier of Warner Robins, Ga., Myleah Rodefer, Meredith Frazier and Abby Frazier all of Leesburg, Ga. and Cayden Frazier of Middlebury, Ind..  He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Frazier and Margaret West Frazier and a sister, Shirley Clark.

Charlie Earl (Little Earl) Adams III, 64

Charlie Earl (Little Earl) Adams III, 64 of Smithville, Ga. died Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.  Memorial services were held Thursday at Mathews Funeral Home.  Rev. Bobby Moye officiated.

Mr. Adams had resided in Albany most of his life.  He retired from Dougherty County Board of Education Facilities Department for twenty four years and was a member of the Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Adams of Smithville, Ga., son, Charlie Earl Adams IV, a daughter, Shannon Lynn Bunch both of Lizella, Ga., a brother, Tommy Adams of Albany a sister, Susan Lile of Green Cove Springs, Fla., three nieces, a nephew, fourteen grandchildren and three step-children, Tim Beamon of Albany, Earl Harper of Leesburg, Ga. and Becky Gill of Smithville, Ga.

Earline Manning Kirkland

Earline Manning Kirkland, age 83, of Flowery Branch, formerly of Albany, passed away Monday, May 21, 2012 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, following an extended illness.

Graveside Services were held Wednesday, May 23 at Floral Memory Gardens in Albany, Georgia. The Rev. Steve Fenlon officiated.

Mrs. Kirkland was born August 9, 1928 to the late William Henry & Versie Elizabeth Manning of Lockhart, Alabama. She was a School Bus Driver for Dougherty County and was a member of Faith Baptist Church. Mrs. Kirkland was also preceded in death by her husband, Maxwell Kirkland; brothers, Earl Manning, Fred Manning, Leon Manning & John Holland Manning; and sister, Lanetta Gavins.

Survivors include sons & daughters-in-law, Max & Janet Kirkland of St. Mary’s and Bud & Judy Kirkland of Gainesville; daughter & son-in-law, Kathy & Bill Chapman of Flowery Branch; sisters, Nell Gautney of Gray, Ruth Shuster of Albany, Ann Brookes of Albany, Janet Hughes of Davenport, Florida, Janette Harrell of Florala, Alabama, & Linda Miller of Paxton, Florida; and 9 grandchildren.

 

John C. Dallas

John C. Dallas died Monday, May 21, 2012 at Phoebe North following a short illness.

His funeral service was held May 24 at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church with interment in Crown Hill Cemetery. Rev. Finbarr Stanton, Rev. Steven Pontzer and Rev. Ben Dallas officiated.

Mr. Dallas was born in Steubenville, Ohio, and raised in Wheeling, W.V. He graduated Linsly Military Institute in 1950 and attended Notre Dame and graduated from Bethany College in 1956 with a B.S. in Business.

Mr. Dallas was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and retired from Delaware North Corporation in 1997 as the president and General Manager of Wheeling Downs Gaming Center.

Survivors include his daughters, Susan E. Dallas, Albany, Lori Dallas Peppel and husband Dan, Daytona Beach,Fla.; son Dr. Jay Dallas and wife Nancy, Arlington; brother, Joe R. Dallas, Wheeling, W.V., 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

James Clinton (Jim) Hall

James Clinton (Jim) Hall died on May 22, 2012, at the Willson Hospice House. The service was held May 25 at Kimbrell-Stern. The service was conducted by The Rev. Bryan Haynes, interment followed in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Hall was born in Brunswick, Georgia on November 12, 1929. He was raised in Berrien County on a farm from the age of 5. He was a graduate of Nashville High School and held an undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia, a law degree from the University Of Georgia School Of Law, and was a graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Banking.

received an honorable discharge from the US Air Force’s Strategic Air Command, having served in North Africa during the Korean Conflict.

In 1956, he joined the Citizens and Southern National Bank in Atlanta (predecessor of Bank of America). In 1960, he was transferred to Albany to serve as Trust Officer. He was later elected Vice President/Trust Officer and at that time, was the youngest vice president and trust officer to obtain that position.

A devoted community leader, Mr. Hall served as President of the Boys’ Club of Albany and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Deerfield School. He was a board member of Darton College Foundation, the Albany YMCA, a member of Friends of Phoebe, and was President of the Albany Kiwanis Club. He was a long-time member of Sherwood Baptist Church, where he served as Finance Chair and Treasurer.

An avid fisherman, golfer and hunter, he also loved his family gatherings at Jekyll Island, Georgia and St. George Island, Florida.

Mr. Hall is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Louise Edwards Hall; his daughter, Mary Kathryn Hall Hawkins; sons, William Henry Hall (Beth) and James Clinton Hall, Jr.; grandchildren, Reedi Hawkins, Jackson Hawkins, Amanda Hall, Hannah Hall, and James C. Hall III, as well as one great-grandson.

 

Kimberley Taylor Davis, 48

Kimberley Taylor Davis, 48, of Georgetown, Ga.died Sunday May 27, 2012 at her residence.
Her funeral service will be held Wednesday 2 p.m. at Kimbrell-Stern. Rev. Steve Hurley will be officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m., one hour before the service at Kimbrell-Stern.

Born in Augusta, Ga., Mrs. Davis lived in Albany most of her life where she graduated from Dougherty High School. She worked at the Bank of Dawson.

Survivors include her husband Keith Davis of Georgetown, Ga.; a daughter Brooklyn Hinton and her husband Jason; a stepson Hunter Davis; her mother Barbara Smith Page; brothers and sisters Marcia Taylor, Tra Taylor, David Smith, Danny Smith and Denise Rawlins; Several Nieces and Nephews.

Michael Fletcher Worsley, 56

Michael Fletcher Worsley, 56, of Albany died Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Willson Hospice. A memorial service was held Tuesday, May 22 at Calvary Baptist Church in Albany. Rev. Chip Gresham officiated.

Mike was born in Donalsonville, Ga. in 1955 and lived most of his life in the Albany and Atlanta areas. He worked in the construction industry and was a master tile layer in his own business. However he is best known for his latter career of auto sales in the Albany area.

He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Worsley and leaves many family members to cherish his memories; mother, Syble Worsley of Albany; son, Fletcher Worsley and his wife Lindsay of Winder, Ga., two daughters, Miranda Worsley of Albany, and Emma Worsley of Leesburg, Ga.; three sisters, Lynn Tatum (Carey), Sharon Garcia (Robert) all of Albany, Lee County, Ga.; brother, Joe Worsley (Brenda) of Albany Lee County, Ga. twin grandsons, Logan and Spencer Worsley of Winder, Ga..He also leaves many nieces and nephews who will forever cherish their memories of “Uncle Mike”; Chris Worsley of Bend, Or., Kelli Slater of Winterville, Ga., Paige Worsley of Smyrna, Ga., Holli Sadler, Jodi Mann and Cathy Cook of Albany and Brett Garcia of Albany, Lee County, Ga..

Mike was surrounded by a loving family in life and through the end as he bravely fought his battle with lung cancer. Julius Mark Strosnider, 52

Julius Mark Strosnider, 52, of Albany died May 22, 2012 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Graveside funeral services were held Friday at Crown Hill Cemetery.

A native of Tifton, Ga., Mr. Strosnider had lived in Albany, GA most of his life. He graduated from Albany High School in 1978 and attended Albany Technical College. He was employed for many years with Ayers Corporation, retired from Proctor and Gamble and was a Baptist by faith.

Survivors include his wife, Michiko Strosnider, two sons, Justin Strosnider and Cody Strosnider and his mother, Myrle Strosnider all of Albany, a brother, Kirk Strosnider of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., an aunt, Mollie Wilkes of Albany, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Steve and Suzy Brooks, two nieces, Kelly Brooks and Kaycee Brooks and a nephew, Kevin Brooks of Bainbridge, Ga..

Frances Mildred (Millie) Jernigan, 91

Frances Mildred (Millie) Jernigan, 91, of 601 Summit Drive, Albany died May 23, 2012 at Magnolia Manor in Americus, Ga. Funeral services were held Saturday at the chapel of Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church. Rev. Nancy Scarbrough and Rev. William Collins officiated.  A committal followed at the Oglethorpe City Cemetery, Oglethorpe, Ga., the Rev. Billy Kimbrel officiated.

A native of Oglethorpe, Ga., Mrs. Jernigan had resided in Albany since 1995 moving from Americus, Ga. and had previously lived in Atlanta. She graduated from Oglethorpe High School, took business courses and was employed with Western Union for twenty two years. She was a homemaker and a member of Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church. Mrs. Jernigan was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Eugene R. Jernigan in 2009.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Gene and Nona Jernigan, two grandsons, Tripp Jernigan and Andy Jernigan all of Albany, a sister, Clara Belle Green of Montezuma, Ga., a niece and her husband, Charlene and Ted Collins of Unadilla, Ga. and many relatives in Southwest, Georgia.

Harry Steven Smith, 58

Harry Steven Smith, 58, of Albany died Friday, May 25, 2012 at Columbus Specialty Hospital in Columbus, Ga. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Philema Road Baptist Church. Rev. Dan Harris and Rev. Gary Manning officiated.  Interment followed in Crown Hill Cemetery.

A native of Albany and a former resident of Lee County for over thirty years, Mr. Smith was a member of Philema Road Baptist Church. He was a volunteer firefighter with Lee County, former chairman of the Lee County Democratic Party, retired from Cooper Tire and was a self employed master electrician. Mr. Smith received an award of recognition from the Lee County Fire Department for the 1993 Tornado Rescue Effort.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Pike Smith of Albany, two daughters, Melissa Gayle Gregory of Albany, Kimberly Lashaye Smith Schultz and her husband, Jody of Leesburg, Ga., three grandchildren, Cameron Dean Schultz, Steven Gage Schultz and Landen Bailey Schultz all of Leesburg, Ga.

Fredrick R. (Fred) Ransom, 77

Fredrick R. (Fred) Ransom, 77, of Albany died May 25, 2012 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Graveside funeral services were held Monday at Crown Hill Cemetery. Danny Williams officiated.

A native of Columbus County, N.C., Mr. Ransom graduated from Evergreen High School and attended and played baseball at Louisburg College. He served in the US Army and moved to Albany in 1970. Mr. Ransom was a former partner in Ole Dad’s Club Package and was the retired owner of The House of Spirits.

Survivors include his wife, Clara F. Ransom of Albany, two sons and their wives, Victor (Vic) Ransom and Reenie of Albany, and Raymond Lewis Ransom and Reshma Kakkar of Atlanta, a daughter, Clara Burgess of Albany, a sister, Evelyn Youngerman of Wilmington, N.C., a brother, L.C Ransom and his wife, Lila of Whiteville, N.C., four grandchildren, Candice Burgess of Albany, Trey Burgess of Charlotte, N.C., Aarini Ransom and Zohra Ransom both of Atlanta, and two great-grandchildren, Angel Walker and Mattison Walker. He was preceded in death by a son, Fredrick Anthony Ransom.

Gerald Morris Touchton, 72

Gerald Morris Touchton, 72, of Poulan, Ga. died Saturday, May 19, 2012 at his home. A celebration of life was held Saturday, May 26 at Antioch Baptist Church, Rev. Bruce Gordon officiated.

Gerald was born June 23, 1939 in Quitman, Ga. He attended Barney Elementary and Morven High School. He also attended both ABAC in Tifton, Ga. and the University of Georgia before enlisting in the USAF. He later graduated from the University of Maryland European division while stationed overseas. He retired after 21 years of service.

He was known as many things to his family and friends: Loving Husband for 51 years, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Air Force Veteran, farmer, fisherman, hunter, humorist, mentor, poet, car enthusiast and friend. In recent years he loved rebuilding old cars and trucks. He had a passion for “tinkering” around the shop and he could fix just about anything, especially if he had access to duck tape and bailing wire. He loved family, and was very proud of his grand-babies. He was blessed to also have many nephews and nieces who enjoyed his company and the wisdom that “Uncle Touch” shared with all of them.

Touchton was preceded in death by his parents Carroll and Eldora Touchton and his brothers Alton and Leon Touchton.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Mary Ashley Touchton of Poulan, son Terry Touchton (Marybeth) and granddaughters Taylor and Hannah of Denver, Co., daughter Tlisa Northcutt (Scott) and granddaughters Avery and Aubrey of Anchorage, Ark., sister, Norma Sinclair of Poulan sister in law Louise Touchton of Barney, and sister in-law Yvonne Ashley (Duke Otter) of Arlington, Wa., and a number of other beloved family members including his English Bulldogs Uno and Gracie.

 Maxine Hill Slappey

Maxine Hill Slappey, died Sunday, May 27, 2012 at her residence.

Her funeral service will be Wednesday 10 a.m. at Kimbrell-Stern with a private interment to follow. The family will receive friends Wednesday 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Kimbrell-Stern.

A native of Dougherty County Mrs. Slappey was a 1947 graduate of Albany High School and a member of Avalon United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband A. M. “Gus” Slappey Jr.

Survivors include her daughters, Deborah Anne McNease, Leesburg, Sandra Newana Brymer, Albany, Tammye Maxine Brackin, Leesburg; sons, Walter Mark Slappey, Leesburg, John Tye Slappey, Leesburg, Augustus Miles Slappey, Leesburg, 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Quinton Heath Mock, 41

Quinton Heath Mock, 41, of Newnan, Ga., died Wednesday May 23, 2012. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday May 29 at Mathews Funeral Home. Rev. Collin Brown officiated. Interment followed in Crown Hill Cemetery.

A native of Albany,  Mr. Mock was an honor graduate of Westover High School and graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology. He was an industrial engineer employed with Garvey Corporation and was a member of Sherwood Baptist Church. Mr. Mock was preceded in death by his father, Walter Ray Mock, maternal grandmother, Margie York and paternal grandmother, Ella Mae Mock.

Survivors include his wife, Jessica Wong Mock, a son, Lofton Mock both of Newnan, Ga., his mother and her husband, Eddie York Mitchell and David Mitchell, his sister, Shannon Mock, paternal grandfather, John L. Gerald Morris Touchton, 72

Gerald Morris Touchton, 72, of Poulan, Ga. died Saturday, May 19, 2012 at his home. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, May 26 at 4 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church, 3193 St. Hwy 313, Sylvester, Ga. 31791. Rev. Bruce Gordon will officiate.

Gerald was born June 23, 1939 in Quitman, Ga. He attended Barney Elementary and Morven High School. He also attended both ABAC in Tifton, Ga. and the University of Georgia before enlisting in the USAF. He later graduated from the University of Maryland European division while stationed overseas. He retired after 21 years of service.

He was known as many things to his family and friends: Loving Husband for 51 years, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Air Force Veteran, farmer, fisherman, hunter, humorist, mentor, poet, car enthusiast and friend. In recent years he loved rebuilding old cars and trucks. He had a passion for “tinkering” around the shop and he could fix just about anything, especially if he had access to duck tape and bailing wire. He loved family, and was very proud of his grand-babies. He was blessed to also have many nephews and nieces who enjoyed his company and the wisdom that “Uncle Touch” shared with all of them.

Touchton was preceded in death by his parents Carroll and Eldora Touchton and his brothers Alton and Leon Touchton.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Mary Ashley Touchton of Poulan, son Terry Touchton (Marybeth) and granddaughters Taylor and Hannah of Denver, Co., daughter Tlisa Northcutt (Scott) and granddaughters Avery and Aubrey of Anchorage, Ark., sister, Norma Sinclair of Poulan sister in law Louise Touchton of Barney, and sister in-law Yvonne Ashley (Duke Otter) of Arlington, Wa., and a number of other beloved family members including his English Bulldogs Uno and Gracie.

Katie McMillan Gunter, 67

Katie McMillan Gunter, 67 of Albany died Sunday May 20, 2012 at Willson Hospice House.

Funeral services will be Thursday 11 a.m. at Kimbrell-Stern. Rev. Greg Davis will be officiating. Entombment will follow at Crown Hill Mausoleum Chapel.

A native of Nashville, Ga. Mrs. Gunter has lived most of her life in Albany where she was a member of Central Baptist Church and owner of The Tax Shop. Mrs. Gunter’s passion was travel, and she loved taking her grandkids to the beach. She loved to work in her yard and prided herself on keeping an immaculate yard. Mrs. Gunter was known for being very independent, social and having an outgoing personality. Most of all, she will always be remembered for the love and dedication she gave to her daughter and grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Haley G. King of Albany, grandchildren, Mason and Savannah King of Albany, brother, E.D. McMillan of Nashville, Ga. and sister, Emma Jean Hendley of Tifton, Ga..

Alma Smith Brown, 80, of Baconton, Ga. died Friday May 18, 2012 at Pelham Parkway Nursing Home.

A graveside funeral service will be held Monday 3 p.m. at Crown Hill Cemetery.  Rev. Steven Hurley will be officiating.  The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at Kimbrell-Stern one hour before service.

Born in Clinch, County Mrs. Brown lived in Albany since 1969 where she retired from Flint River Textile in 1985.  She was preceded in death by her husband Jewell Brown in 1995.

Survivors include her daughter Gloria B. James A, Wilson, 94, of Albany, GA died May 14, 2012 at his residence. A funeral mass was conducted Friday, May 18 at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church.  Rev. Finbarr Stanton officiated.

A native of Mescaline, Iowa, Mr. Wilson had resided in Albany since 1959 moving from Boynton Beach, Fla. He was retired from Adams AGRI Machinery Company and was a retired MSGT in the Air Force serving during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Wilson was a member of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and a member of American Legion Post # 30.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Sievers Wilson, son, Sgt. Gerald L. Wilson, daughter-in-law, Vanda B. Wilson, two grandchildren, Gerald (Jerry) Wilson Jr. and David (Davy) Wilson.

Survivors include his children, James G. Wilson of Spanaway, Wash., Alvin ”Chip” Wilson (Carolyn) of Leesburg, Ga., Shirley Wilson of Albany, Michael Wilson (Joan) of Duluth, Ga., Diane Wilson-Poey (Frank) of Worth County, Ga., Julie Ramsey (Jon Allen) of Albany, and Betty McGee (Barry) of Leesburg, Ga.; a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; niece, Helen Weiershauser.

Joseph Thomas Smith, 83

Joseph Thomas Smith, 83, of Albany, Ga., died May 15, 2012 at his residence. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 18 at Mathews Funeral Home, 3206 Gillionville Road. Rev. Leigh Ann Raynor and Rev. Nancy Scarbrough officiated. Committal services will be conducted at Andersonville National Cemetery; Andersonville, Ga. with Rev. William Collins officiated. Military honors will follow.

Mr. Smith received a B.S. in Economics from St. Peter’s College, a Masters in Education Administration from St. Michael’s college, and a Ph.D. in Educational Management from Florida State University. Mr. Smith, a retired Marine Corps Lt. Col., and veteran of the Korean and Viet Nam conflicts, was decorated during military service by the United States and foreign governments.  His awards include the Legion of Merit with Combat “V”, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and Staff Service Honor Medal. He is a graduate of the Naval War College.

In addition to his military service, Mr. Smith was a retired educator who taught at regional colleges and local school systems. His memberships included the local community action committee, Porterfield UMC Alpha Sunday School class and XYZ club, Golden K Kiwanis Club, Southwest Georgia Genealogical Society, Baker County Historical Society, the Southwest Georgia Retired Officers Association, the Marine Corps League, and the American Legion, Post 30, Albany, Ga.

Mr. Smith, originally from Newark, N.J., is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gloria Parr Smith, his daughter, Kathryn S. Hanks and husband Jim, his son Steven P. Smith and wife Stephanie, and his grandchildren Ivy Hanks, Chad Hanks, Stewart Hanks, Davis Smith, and Collier Smith. He is preceded in death by his son Michael B. Smith.

She was a homemaker and a member of The First Baptist Church of Albany.  Mrs. Harris helped Dr. Thomas Mitchum open his office and was formerly employed with the Internal Revenue Service.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam B. Harris and a grandson, Tyler R. Harris.

Fay Nadrich, 100, of Albany, died Thursday at Century Pines.

Mrs. Nadrich was born in New York, N.Y. and moved to Albany in 2004.  She had lived most of her life in the New York area, moving to Ft. Lauderdale in 1992.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Nadrich, a son, Stanley Nadrich, and a granddaughter, Karen Nadrich.

She is survived by her son, Norman Nadrich and his wife Leslie, Albany; a sister:  Muriel Mines of California; a daughter-in-law:  Ruth Nadrich, Buffalo, N.Y.; 7 grandchildren:  Randy Nadrich and his wife Suzanne, Camilla, Ga., Pam Klein and her husband Ron, N. Melvin Lynn Wylie

Melvin Lynn Wylie, of Albany, died Thursday, May 17, 2012.  His Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m., Monday, May 18, 2012 at Porterfield United Methodist Church with Rev. Leigh Ann Raynor and Rev. William Collins officiating. Visitation will be held 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Kimbrell Stern Funeral Home.

Born October 2, 1936 in Rosemark, Tenn., to the late Melvin and Wilna Dunavant Wylie, Lynn graduated from University of Tennessee where he received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Agricultural Engineering.  He was a member and officer of FarmHouse Fraternity there and remained an avid UT fan throughout his adult life.   After college graduation, Lynn served in the US Army as a helicopter pilot, most notably flying the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea in 1962.

Lynn and his wife, Kay, moved to Albany in 1966, where Lynn worked as an engineer at Lilliston Corporation.  He served as Vice-President of Engineering until the plant closed in 1986, then continued his engineering career as a contract engineer with Technical Associates after that time.    Known for his engineering knowledge and expertise in designing farm equipment at both Butler Manufacturing and Lilliston Corp., he also shared this knowledge with other engineers through his leadership in the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, Farm and Industrial Equipment Institute, and the American Society for Testing and Materials.

Lynn was active in the Exchange Club of Albany serving in leadership roles as President, Vice-President and Treasurer over the years.  He was selected as Mr. Exchange in 1970, and also served on the Board of Directors of the Exchange Club Fair of Southwest Georgia.  He was actively involved with Boy Scout Troop 111 and helped build several Habitat for Humanity homes.

Lynn and Kay joined Porterfield United Methodist Church in 1966 when moving to Albany, and over the years Lynn served in leadership roles as Chairman of the Board and Chairman of Board of Trustees as well as working  with Porterfield’s youth groups.  Lynn’s greatest pleasure was spending time with family and friends and he was passionate about his love of nature, especially enjoying time in the mountains, camping and hiking.

Survivors include Kay, his wife of fifty years; one daughter, Sherri Wylie and her husband, Sam Hardin of Roswell, Ga.; two sons, Roger Wylie and his wife, Daiva Tautvydas, of Seattle, Wash.,  and Cliff Wylie and his wife, Neema Amatya, of Kirkland, Wash..  He is survived by five grandchildren, Beth Wylie-Hardin, Zach Wylie-Hardin, Asta Wylie, Aidan Wylie, Ryn Wylie; step-grandson, Sam Hardin IV; his sister and brother-in-law, Wilna and Dick Lovett of Beaufort, S.C., and sister-in-law and husband, Martha Jo and David Owen of Eads, Tenn.; three nieces and one nephew.

Lynn was preceded in death by his parents, Wilna and Melvin Wylie, his brother, Don Wylie and sister, Karen Wylie.

Robert S. Castleberry, 77

Robert S. Castleberry, 77, of Leesburg, Ga., died May 11, 2012 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.  Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Mathews Funeral Home.  Pastor John Powell will officiate.  Interment will follow in Providence Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Worth County, Ga.

A native of Doles, Ga., Mr. Castleberry was born to the late Aubrey and Lilah Houston Castleberry.  He grew up in Doles and attended Albany High School and graduated from Sylvester High School.  After graduation, he attended Georgia Southwestern College and served in the United States Navy.

Mr. Castleberry was employed with Bell South Telephone Company as an electronic technician for thirty seven years and was a lifetime member of The AT&T Pioneers.  He was a Baptist by faith and was a member of The Loyal Order of The Moose.  He was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne Castleberry.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ned Alvin Knighton and Addie Elaine White Knighton.

James H. “Diamond Jim” Langdale, 82, of Albany, died Saturday May 12, 2012 at the Willson Hospice House.

Mrs. Eubanks was a native and lifelong resident of Leesburg, Ga. and was born to the late Lawrence W. and Leslie Wisener Breeden. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amber Eubanks and a sister, Valerie Breeden. She played basketball at Lee County High School and retired from Twin Oaks Elementary School where she was the cafeteria manager.  Mrs. Eubanks was a member of Kinchafoonee Baptist Church and the Loyal Order of the Moose # 1285.  She was an emeritus member of the Order of The Eastern Star, Crepe Myrtle Chapter # 163 and past president of the V.F.W. # 2785 Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband of fifty five years, Neal Eubanks, a daughter, June L Eubanks (Richard Johnson), two sons and their wives, Calvin N. (Rachel) Eubanks Jr. and Melvin W. A native of Ozark, Ala., Mr. Spurlock was a resident of Georgetown, GA for many years and a resident of Albany, GA for fifty years.  He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War, attended Bethel Holiness Tabernacle and retired from Georgia Pacific after thirty five years.

Douglas Taylor Bailey, 14, of Leesburg, Ga., died May 7, 2012 at Medical Center of Central Georgia. Born in Albany on October 23, 1997, Taylor was an eighth grade student in the Lee County School System. He was active in Lee County Dixie League Baseball for six years and had the opportunity to go to the national play offs with the Cubs, under the direction of coaches, Joey Pickle, Stevie Williams and Roger Wingate. Taylor loved to fish with his “Idols”, Bill Price and Shorty Pollock, he was a computer genius, he loved being with his family and loved to assist his niece with her homework and he was learning to play the acoustical guitar. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Jack Bailey Sr. and Helen Bailey and maternal grandmother, Linda Diane Anderson.

Joe Beard, 75, of Albany died Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Wynfield Park Health and Rehab. Memorial services will be held Sunday May 13, 2012 at 3 p.m. at Mathews Funeral Home.

A native of Troy, Ala., Mr. Beard had resided in Albany since 1957 moving here from Morgan, Ga.. He was a graduate of Morgan High School in 1953 where he was active on the basketball team, was the quarterback for the football team and still holds the state record for reed vaulting.

Mr. Beard worked with Western Electric for a number of years before starting his own company, Albany Telephone Service Company.

He was a member of the Morgan United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Holman Beard, his parents and four sisters.

Survivors include a son, Gary Beard, a daughter, Gayle B. Woolard and her husband Stephen, a brother, Bill Beard and his wife, Janet and a grandchild, Walker Woolard all of Albany.

The family is at the residence of Stephen and Gayle Woolard, 2401 Pleasant Drive, Albany.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 p.m. until the funeral hour at Mathews Funeral Home.

Pauline Kimbrell Chatman, 73

Pauline Kimbrell Chatman, 73, of Lee County, Ga., died May 3, 3012 at her residence. Funeral services were held Monday at 11 a.m. at Mathews Funeral Home. Rev. Dorsey Kimbrell officiated. Interment followed in Crown Hill Cemetery.

A native of Patmos, Ga., Mrs. Chatman had resided in Albany most of her life before moving to Lee County twenty years ago. She was employed as a supervisor with Shoney’s Restaurant on Broad Avenue in Albany for many years and retired from the Lee County School system. Mrs. Chatman was a Baptist by faith.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet L. Draper and her husband, Lane and Deborah Langford and a son, Terry G. Bowman, all of Leesburg, Ga., five brothers, J.C. Kimbrell and his wife, Irma of Shellman, Ga., Dorsey Kimbrell and his wife Elizabeth of Hopewell, Va., Allen Kimbrell of Ft. Gaines, Ga. and Pearson Kimbrell of Albany, three sisters, Eunice Carter of West Palm Beach, Fla., Mary Sellers Layman and her husband, Clyde of Unadilla, Ga. and Ruth Whiting and her husband, Julian of Albany, four grandchildren, Bobby Wayne Ethridge, Shauna Layne Graham and her husband, Jason, Tim Langford and Derby Tangwall all of Leesburg, Ga. and Brandon Lane Draper and his wife, Amanda of Acworth, Ga., five great-grandchildren, Marlee Graham, Kylee Graham, Tanner Graham, Brantley Langford and Neila Langford. She was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Paul Sellers and Bill Carter.
