Darton Baseball to face East Georgia in GCAA first round

Written by David Mann

5/7/2012 (ALBANY) – The Darton College Cavaliers will face East Georgia College in the first round of the GCAA tournament on Friday, at 3:30 p.m., in Covington.

The tournament is scheduled to be webcast live via this link: http://www.gcaa-sports.org/main/news.php?id=205.

The Cavaliers enter the tournament as the No. 3-seed after finishing 1-3 in a series with Georgia Perimeter College, who hosts the GCAA tournament. The Cavs swept No. 6-seed East Georgia College during the regular season.

Darton head coach Scot Hemmings said that although he originally wanted a higher seeding and a first-round bye, he sees the first game with East Georgia as a positive position for the Cavs.

“It will give us a chance to get into tournament mode,” he said. “Sometimes it takes four or five innings to remember that hey – if you get beaten, you go home.”

A win Friday would put Darton up against No. 2-seed Georgia Perimeter, Saturday, at 3:30 p.m.

Darton College winter sports rank third nationally

 Written by David Mann

4/19/2012 (CLEVELAND) – The National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators announced Darton College Athletics as No. 3 among the winter leaders of the 2011-12 NATYCAA Cup Standings.

Darton’s winter sports include women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and men’s wrestling. All of Darton’s winter programs produced NJCAA All-American student-athletes in the 2011-2012 season, culminating in freshman swimmer Anna Macht’s national championship title in the 400 IM.

“Again the hard-work and dedication of our student-athletes, coaching staff and our very supportive faculty and staff at Darton College has led to another successful athletic season that has brought this national recognition to our campus,” said Dr. Mike Kiefer, director of athletics at Darton.

Darton garnered 84.5 points in the scholarship college division poll. Iowa Central Community College led with 123.0 total points. Monroe Community College (New York) ranked second with 92.5 points.

The Iowa Central and Monroe athletic programs house sports not offered at Darton, such as men’s basketball and hockey, which may have contributed to their higher point totals.

Darton’s fall sports programs finished No. 4 overall in a previous poll by the NATYCAA.

Darton’s ongoing spring sports – baseball, softball and golf – are all currently ranked nationally.

Darton Golf team struggles in round one, determined to qualify

Written by David Mann

4/17/2012 (MELBOURNE, Fla.) – The Darton College Cavaliers finished 21 strokes behind the NJCAA District II Championship leader after the first two rounds of golf action Monday.

The Cavs struggled in their first two rounds and closed with 299 and 306 strokes, respectively, to slip into fourth place. Tournament host Brevard College, of Melbourne, Fla., led No. 1-ranked Meridian Community College by five strokes as the tournament resumed this morning.

The tourney should end around 3 p.m. today. The top seven teams qualify for the NJCAA national championship, scheduled for May 13, at Sand Creek Golf Club in Newton, Kan.

“We pretty much shot ourselves out of a chance to win, but we’re in decent shape to qualify,” head golf coach Bill Jones said.

High winds beat his Cavaliers down on Monday, he said.

“It was already blowing 15 mph at 7:30 (a.m.),” he said. “It ate at them mentally and physically.”

Even Darton’s mighty Joe Sakulpolphaisan, currently the No. 1 golfer in the NJCAA, never had a good round Monday. Leading the Cavs, he birdied his last three holes to finish the first round 1-over at 71, but he later bogied the last three holes of round two and shot a 74.

“From top to bottom, nobody did what they usually do,” Jones said.

Darton College baseball swings into national polls with new head coach Scot Hemmings

 Written by David Mann

3/28/2012 (ALBANY) – The Darton College Cavaliers ranked No. 12 nationally in a poll released by the NJCAA today,  which is the first top-20 ranking in the baseball program’s history, indicating a big step for the Cavs under their new head coach, Scot Hemmings.

“The guys have bought into a system and are executing it at a high rate of effectiveness,” Hemmings said. “And the ranking is good for the program, no doubt about that. We’re working with some big recruits – this should help sway them too.”

The Cavs are hot, and the NJCAA knows it. They’ve won 17 of their last 19 ballgames, positioning them at the top of the highly competitive GCAA conference. Their current 25-8 record is the ninth best in the NJCAA, and they’re 12-1 in conference play.

“We’ve come a long way – I think we’re a complete 360 from where we were last year,”  freshman pitcher Matt Aldrich said. “We put Darton’s name back on the map.”

Along with its current ranking, the Darton program can also boast of Aldrich’s NJCAA-leading 81 strikeouts, and outfielder Kevin Manos, who leads the nation with 47 RBI.

“I think they’re excited about the direction we’re headed, but not satisfied with where we’re at,” Hemmings said of his team. “We now have to focus on not forgetting how we got here – through hard work, playing hard and executing our game plan.”

Darton College Head Soccer Coach Receives Coveted Honors

Special to the Journal

(ALBANY) Two of American soccer’s governing bodies – the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and the National Junior College Athletic Association – chose Darton College head men’s soccer coach Bart Sasnett as the coach of the year.

The NJCAA recognized Sasnett as the Southeast District Coach of the Year, which covers Regions 17 and 10 (Georgia and South Carolina). The NSCAA chose Sasnett as the Junior College South Regional Coach of The Year, accounting for the southern quarter of the U.S.

“Coach Sasnett is very deserving of this award,” Darton College Athletic Director Mike Kiefer said. “His team obviously had great success throughout the season and this award is a reflection of their hard work.”

In the fall 2011 season the Cavaliers finished 3rd nationally, had eight All-Region 17 namings and two NJCAA All-Americans while sophomore Diego Ramos earned “Athlete of the Year” accolades from the NSCAA. They never lost a Region matchup and finished 19-2-1.

Sasnett, who has come to be known as a player’s coach, gives the credit to the dedication of his 36 athletes and the Darton community.

“To have the kind of season we had, it isn’t just from one person,” he said. “It takes an entire institution. I recognize that everyone at our institution puts in to help us be successful. The business office, the admissions office, the faculty – if you don’t have the support of your college, you just can’t make it this far.”
