ASU to hold annual national summer sports program

Written by Edythe Bradley

Youths in the Dougherty County area can look forward to a summer full of fun and activities by registering for Albany State University’s 2012 National Youth Sports Program (NYSP). Registration will be held Saturday, May 12, from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the East Albany Pediatrics and Adolescent Center at 1712 East Broad Ave. in Albany. Free medical examinations, which are sponsored by Albany Area Primary Health Care, Inc., will be given to students interested in participating in the NYSP. Children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to complete registration and receive free medical examinations. Vendors will be on site during the event to provide education and entertainment for adults and children.

Set to begin on Monday, June 4, at 8 a.m. in the HPER Gymnasium, the NYSP will provide a variety of structured sports activities and educational workshops for the economically disadvantaged youths, age 9-15, in Dougherty County. The daily operating hours are 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays through July 6. Participants of the program, in collaboration with the National Youth Sports Corporation (NYSC), will receive a variety of incentives throughout the program.

Although the medical examinations are free of charge, program officials say a registration fee of $100 per child will be charged for the program.

“Because of decreased funding this year and increased operating costs, we have to charge a small fee for the first time for our summer program,” said Robert Skinner, NYSP coordinator. “For more than 38 years, we have offered the program free of charge to thousands of students in the Dougherty County area, but we have no choice but to charge to help offset costs of providing this outstanding service to the children of this community. Thanks to the staff at Albany Area Primary Health Care, Inc and the East Albany Pediatrics and Adolescent Center, medical examinations remain free of charge.”

Because space for the program is limited, Skinner encourages parents to preregister or come early for registration and free medical examinations on May 12. Money orders or cashier’s checks should be made payable to Albany State University.

“We have a limited number of slots for the NYSP this year. We will do all we can to accommodate all children who are interested in the program because we know how much they enjoy the activities,” Skinner said. “The NYSP gives children something positive to do during the summer.”

Albany State is participating in the Summer Food Service Program and meals will be provided to all children eligible for the program. To be eligible to receive meals, children must meet the income guidelines for reduced price meals in the National School Lunch Program. Children who are part of households that receive food stamps or benefits under the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) or Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) are automatically eligible to receive meals.

For more information about the NYSP, contact Robert Skinner, project administrator, at 229-430-3817 or 229-430-4762 on Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m

Georgia nursing board grants full approval to ASU nursing program

Special to the Journal

Albany State University’s Department of Nursing has received “continued approval” from the Georgia Board of Nursing through 2015.  Annual reviews and approval from the agency means the university’s nursing education standards meet state regulations in training students to deliver safe and effective care to patients in a holistic manner.

There are three classifications for approval: full, provisional and conditional. ASU has received full approval. The approval allows students to continue the pursuit of baccalaureate degrees, including registered nurses (RNs) who are students in ASU’s registered nurse completion program.  “Full approval means that we’re providing a quality experience for health care providers. I’m very proud of our students and faculty,” said Dr. Cathy Williams, ASU Nursing Department Chair.

Annually, the division’s academic programs undergo a thorough review; then the fourth year, during a 2-3 day campus visit, the Board of Nursing reviewer evaluates the program, according to Williams. The assessment includes a review of the curriculum and course objectives of the generic Bachelor of Science, the accelerated second degree Bachelor of Science, and the Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science programs. Interviews were conducted with faculty, staff and nurse leaders at hospitals where students engage in clinical training. Class loads and space allocations were also reviewed. Additionally, student retention, attrition and graduation rates were examined. “We’re always preparing for this extensive review,” said Williams, the Fuller E. Calloway Endowed Professor. At the end of the process, a determination is made.

ASU is the only historically black university in the state with a nursing program. “This approval is evidence of the stellar work that our nursing faculty and students continually do. Our nursing program is among the best in the state,” said ASU President Dr. Everette J. Freeman. Presently, there are 300 students enrolled in the pre-nursing program and 150 undergraduate students on tract to become registered nurses.  The Georgia Board of Nursing requires students to maintain an 80 percent pass rate every year to earn full approval of a license without sanctions. ASU students exceeded the mandate with a 100 percent pass rate in 2011.

ASU began offering nursing baccalaureate degrees in 1961. For more information about how to enroll in the 2012-2013 class, please call 229-430-3027.

Albany State to host Alice Coachman Invitational Track Meet March 31

Written by Edythe Bradley

Albany State University will host the 20th Annual Alice Coachman Invitational Track Meet on Saturday, March 31, at ASU’s Robert Cross Track and Field Complex and Hugh Mills Stadium Complex in Albany, Ga.

The hammer throw competition, followed by the javelin throw, is slated to start at 8 a.m. at the ASU complex. The men and women’s 3000-meter steeplechase will be held at the Mills Complex at11 a.m. All other track and field events, starting with the long jump events, will begin at 11 a.m. at the recently resurfaced Albany State facility. The 4×100-meter relay events will start at 11:30 a.m. The awards ceremony will be held at the conclusion of the meet.

Sponsored by the ASU women and men’s track and field programs, the meet will feature world-class athletes from some of the top collegiate teams and unattached athletes in the Southeast. Several teams, including Columbus State University and Edward Waters College, along with several SIAC teams, including Morehouse College, Stillman College and Paine College, are expected to compete.

ASU athletes, including throwers CreeAnn Perkins and Patrick Jordan, runners Brittany Carter and Tabareyon Jones, pole vaulters Briana Bowles and Timothy Jackson and hurdlers Irrion Conaler and Jordan Thompson, are favored to take top honors in the track and field events.

The annual track meet is held in honor of Alice Coachman-Davis, the first African American woman to win an Olympic gold medal. Coachman-Davis made history and gained international attention by capturing the high jump title with a record-setting jump of 5′ 6 1/8″ during the 1948 Olympic Games in London.

While the 1948 games catapulted her to international acclaim and the first endorsement among African-American women, she had proven herself as a major track and field force in prior years. She won 10 consecutive U.S. titles in the high jump and national titles at 50-meters, 100-meters and as a member in the 400-meter relay on the Tuskegee championship team. Many believe she would have dominated the 1940 and 1944 Summer Games, which were cancelled because of World War II.

The Albany, Ga., native attended Tuskegee University, but earned her bachelor’s degree from Albany State (College) after returning from the 1948 games. As a collegian, she was a member of three Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) championship basketball teams. She dominated Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) competitions in the high jump. From 1938 to 1948, she won 10 consecutive AAU high jump titles.

In 1994, she established the Alice Coachman Track and Field Foundation, a nonprofit organization that assists both young athletes and retired Olympians.
