Albany Tech, ASU Enter Housing Agreement

Special to the Journal

Albany Technical College and Albany State University will make a formal announcement on Tuesday, December 20, 2011, at 11a.m., in Gibson Hall on the ASU campus, to discuss their new joint housing agreement.

Beginning in January for the spring semester, Albany Tech students who need housing will be able to obtain residence at Albany State’s Wiley or Gibson Halls. In addition to housing, students will also be able to take advantage of a meal plan on ASU’s campus.

This agreement marks the first of its kind between a Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) and a University System of Georgia (USG) institution. Albany Tech and Albany State already have several articulation agreements in place, so this agreement is another win-win for both institutions. In addition, ASU provides public safety on the ATC campus and all men and women’s basketball home games for ATC are played at ASU’s HPER Complex.

“This is a historic opportunity to expand a great relationship,” said Dr. Anthony Parker, President of Albany Technical College.

Since starting its men’s and women’s basketball teams, Albany Tech has had a need to provide reasonable housing for student athletes, many of whom come from other states. This agreement allows Albany Tech’s student athletes to have safe, affordable housing in a collegiate atmosphere.

“ASU has had dormitory space that was not being utilized. This allows ATC students from outside of the community to have a safe place to live while they earn their associate’s degree,” said Parker. Albany State University President Everette J. Freeman said, “This agreement extends the enormously productive relationship with ATC to strengthen the opportunities for ATC students, especially talented athletes,to remain in Albany to complete their undergraduate education and compete athletically.”

Bishop Tackles Federal Budget Deficit with Albany Residents

Nearly 100 Albany residents tried their hand at balancing the federal budget tonight during a deficit reduction workshop held by Representative Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02). The bi-partisan Concord Coalition helped organize the event at Albany Technical College, which put people into groups of five to ten and asked them to work together and act as their own budget committee.

“We cannot continue financing the government on a credit card, and after the town hall meeting tonight it is clear to me that the American people want those days to come to an end,” said Rep. Bishop. “The current federal debt and budget deficit is simply unsustainable, and after years of uncontrolled borrowing and spending, we need to find solutions and stop kicking the can down the road.”

The Concord Coalition is a nationwide, non-partisan, grassroots organization dedicated to educating the public about the causes and consequences of federal budget deficits. During similar town hall events across the country, participants used their “Principles and Priorities Workbook” to examine a variety of spending and revenue options and decide which options are the fairest and most effective way to balance the federal budget.

Rep. Bishop is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition of fiscally responsible Democrats who are working to find a responsible framework to reduce spending, pay down the debt and balance the budget. With the nation focused on the huge fiscal challenges facing the United States, Rep. Bishop wanted to hear directly from local residents about their concerns and listen to their potential solutions.

“Getting our fiscal house in order is a huge task that will require making hard decisions about our nation’s priorities,” said Rep. Bishop. “We are at a moment of truth. We must not place the burden of our fiscal irresponsibility on the backs of our children and grandchildren. I am going to take the solutions I heard tonight back to Washington, share them with my colleagues, and start working immediately to solve this crisis.

Tech student honored for her extra effort

Staff reports

Due to hard work, Ruby Bivens is well on her way to fulfilling her dream of owning a child care center.

This week, Albany Technical College Academic Achievement Center Director Elaine Mercer presented a top achievement award to Bivens in the college’s math lab.

Students working in the lab applauded as the award was presented to Bivens, who has worked her way through the entire Learning Support math courses. She dedicated over 200 hours to the Math Center last quarter alone and continues to go to the Center to continue building her math skills.

Bivens worked for four years at the Moultrie HeadStart before deciding to go back to school. She says her children encouraged her to go back and get her degree and fulfill the life-long dream of owning her own child care center one day.

An Early Childhood Care and Education program student, Bivens is currently pursuing her certificate, but plans to continue on to earn her diploma and associate degree at Albany Tech.

“I had to learn the math again in order to pass the entrance exam and get into my program,” said Bivens. “The math lab staff, especially Ms. Shakitha Hadley, were always patient and willing to work with you to learn the material.”

Academic Achievement Center Director Elaine Mercer says that the center serves a wide variety of students from those who may be just out of high school to those like Bivens who has been out of high school a long time and needs to refresh in order to pass the entrance exam.

The Academic Achievement Center opened on campus in 2009 as part of a Title III Grant awarded to the college to aid learning support students in the areas of reading and math. The center has grown to serve other students who may need to learn study skills, note-taking skills, and several other areas to enhance their college learning experience.
