What do I have to do to keep my computer out of trouble? That was the question and I’m taking it to include avoiding security problems and eliminating actions that bring unwanted or unexpected results. You’re not looking for trouble; just want to enjoy a happy, safe, fast computer environment.

Here goes my rogues list of menaces, counting down in reverse order. Number five is what I call “Happy Fingers”. I’m referring to the practice of leaving your fingers on the keyboard after you’ve input something and unintentionally tapping a key(s) so that some unwanted action occurs; many times without being conscious of it. This ends up with unwanted checkboxes and other errant messages that take you away from your intended task. The opposing effect can happen when you flip through a Website form and miss un-checking a box that results in receipt of email and other offers from companies you had no interest in.

Number four is what I call unsafe email practices. This includes opening mail with attachments from people you don’t recognize, replying to requests for personal information and using a weak password in your email account.

Next on my countdown is neglecting needed maintenance and backups. Even if you have Windows updates and your AVG updates and scans on automatic, you should manually verify that all is well on some kind of regular basis. If you are backing up important files automatically, verify the procedure to make sure it works as you expect.

Second from the worst is unsafe surfing. Traveling in cyberspace is kind of like real life travel. You need to be aware of the neighborhood you’re in. The worst possible neighborhood for picking up malware is a porno site. Second worst is an illegal music sharing site. There always seems to be some site that offers copyrighted music for “free”. Current, popular music is never free except maybe as a snippet to get you to buy a song or an album. There are some sites that offer classical music free and you will sometimes find music whose copyright has expired, but don’t expect current offerings. If you find yourself accidentally on a porno or other undesirable site, close your browser and empty all the temporary files (easy to do with a free utility like CCleaner or SlimCleaner).

At the top of my rogues list is a teenage boy. There is no more dangerous threat to computer tranquility than a teenage boy. They generally combine happy fingers and a lack of attention to detail with a penchant for pornography and a love of music, especially “free” music. If you have a child or grandchild in this category it would be well to let him sign into your PC with his own profile, or better yet buy him a separate PC. That will probably be cheaper and less aggravating in the long run. I say this not so much as a criticism of the species, but as a warning to my readers. Teenage boys cannot help it; they’re just wired that way, best forewarned than sorry.

For 2012, resolve to send your questions to:geekspeak@mchsi.com

Here’s a brand new way of looking at your New Year’s resolutions. Don’t make any. Do nothing different in ’12 than you did in 2011. Eat the same…Exercise the same…Spend the same…Study the same. JUST AS LONG AS you don’t mind getting the same results in 2012 as you did in 2011 – change nothing. Obviously I am being a bit tongue-and-cheek to make my point.

Someone once said that the definition of insanity is to do the same thing you’ve always done – but always expect different results. It is kind of ridiculous to think you can expect something new to come from doing things the same way you always have.

In 2012 – do something different. Set some realistic goals for yourself and write them down. Repeat them everyday – out loud. Nothing will happen until you learn to speak it. Don’t reach for the moon – just reach a little higher this year than you did the last.

What is really the difference is between a $1,000,000,000 race horse and a $100,000 race horse? Is the million dollar horse actually 10X faster than the $100,000.00 horse? Of course not! All a horse and rider have to do to be 10X as valuable is to “win by a nose” What I’m saying is this – just be a “nose better” in 2012. That small amount has the potential to move you 10 times further what you would think.

So this year – don’t set yourself up for a world of disappointments. Just move the bar by an inch. In the world of sports, champions are separated by a split second, a hundredth of a second, a margin of less than an inch, or just one punch. And like all athletes in a race – don’t forget to have the people around you to help you succeeded like coaches that have done it or have coached others to do what you want to accomplish. Make 2012 YOUR year!

Special to the Journal

The Albany State University Lyceum Committee has been selected by the National Endowment for the Arts to receive a Challenge America Fast-Track Review Grant. The committee was selected to receive one of the 162 grants of $10,000 awarded to organizations in 46 states plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This is the second consecutive year ASU has been awarded the grant.

With this grant the Albany State University Lyceum Committee will bring the internationally renowned Imani Winds Woodwind Quintet to Albany, Ga. on Jan. 17, 2012 for a day-long cultural residency. While in Albany, Imani Winds will conduct a master class for students from Albany State University as well as area junior and senior high school students from Dougherty and Lee Counties. They will also present a formal concert for the general public. Both events will take place in Albany’s Municipal Auditorium. The master class is scheduled to take place from 11a.m. until 1p.m., and the evening’s performance will begin at 7:30 p.m.

An independent agency of the federal government, the National Endowment for the Arts advances artistic excellence, creativity and innovation for the benefit of individuals and communities.

“Taken together, these Challenge America Fast-Track grants provide an extraordinary sampling of the work that arts organizations do to reach underserved communities,” said NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman. “With these grants, we are helping to ensure that art works for all Americans.”

“This is a tremendous opportunity for the citizens of Albany, young and old, to have an ensemble of musicians of this caliber in our city, working with our young musicians, and performing for us all,” said Dr. Leroy Bynum, Jr., dean for the College of Arts and Humanities at ASU and chair of the Lyceum Committee. “We are very fortunate to once again have received this grant from the NEA. It’s a validation of our efforts towards arts exposure to all citizens of this community and of the consistently high quality of arts presentations this institution maintains.”

Albany State University’s Lyceum Committee consists of 15 members representing ASU’s students, faculty, community supporters and sponsors. The committee supports concerts, lectures, recitals, theatrical productions, visual arts exhibitions and other events for ASU and Southwest Georgia.

In a city rated as the fourth poorest in the nation, it would be easy to see Albanians wrapped up in their own problems. However, there are folks who are taking their valuable time to help those less fortunate. A Place 4 Hope is one such effort.

Founded last year, the organization describes itself as “a ministry established for the purpose of providing a place of respite for those who find themselves living in the seemingly hopeless circumstance of homelessness.”

While many people automatically think of food and shelter as needs for the homeless, there are already options available. A place 4 Hope, instead, focuses on things people don’t usually think about as essential, but can be just as important like hygiene, clean clothing, access to a telephone and the internet, and the ability to receive mail. In addition, there are also people available who they can speak to about the resources available to help them get out of their situation.

A ministry of the Salvation Army, A Place 4 Hope is now asking the community for some help. “Last year, we got a lot of support from our friends. We donated several blankets, pillows, and towels. We weren’t quite sure what items they really needed. This year, A Place 4 Hope gave a list of things that they need for daily operation,” said Roni Ware, a volunteer with the organization.

“A few of the items that they list are: hygiene products, scrubs, washing detergent, pocket tissues, combs and most importantly blankets,” Ware said.

Currently, the Albany Parks and Recreation Department are holding a drive to get hold of these much needed items. “Currently, in addition to ARPD, the Department of Human Resources and the students at the Lockett Station Afterschool Program have taken up the charge to help as well. We are really excited about the feedback and we hope to build on that going forward.”

The drive is slated to end on December 20, but Ware and her partner in crime Kozman Burnam (aka DJ Dwayne) hope to make this into a year round initiative. “We both know people who are homeless or have been homeless, so whatever we can do to serve these individuals, we will,” Ware said.

In addition to the much needed items Ware mentioned, she says there are other ways to help. “A Place 4 Hope also accepts monetary donations. Those wanting to donate money should make checks out to The Salvation Army with A Place 4 Hope in the memo line or online at https://donate.salvationarmyusa.org/page.aspx?pid=207#location,” she said in an email to the Journal.

A Place 4 Hope is located at 206 S. Monroe Street in Albany, Georgia.
