Darton College baseball swings into national polls with new head coach Scot Hemmings

 Written by David Mann

3/28/2012 (ALBANY) – The Darton College Cavaliers ranked No. 12 nationally in a poll released by the NJCAA today,  which is the first top-20 ranking in the baseball program’s history, indicating a big step for the Cavs under their new head coach, Scot Hemmings.

“The guys have bought into a system and are executing it at a high rate of effectiveness,” Hemmings said. “And the ranking is good for the program, no doubt about that. We’re working with some big recruits – this should help sway them too.”

The Cavs are hot, and the NJCAA knows it. They’ve won 17 of their last 19 ballgames, positioning them at the top of the highly competitive GCAA conference. Their current 25-8 record is the ninth best in the NJCAA, and they’re 12-1 in conference play.

“We’ve come a long way – I think we’re a complete 360 from where we were last year,”  freshman pitcher Matt Aldrich said. “We put Darton’s name back on the map.”

Along with its current ranking, the Darton program can also boast of Aldrich’s NJCAA-leading 81 strikeouts, and outfielder Kevin Manos, who leads the nation with 47 RBI.

“I think they’re excited about the direction we’re headed, but not satisfied with where we’re at,” Hemmings said of his team. “We now have to focus on not forgetting how we got here – through hard work, playing hard and executing our game plan.”

ASU Lady Ram earns SIAC softball honors for outstanding performances

Written by Edythe Bradley

An Albany State University Lady Ram has been selected for softball player of the week honors by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) after her outstanding performances in two weekend softball games. Freshman pitcher Chelsea Hicks earned SIAC East Division Softball Pitcher of the Week honors after leading the Lady Rams a victory and save against the Fort Valley State University Lady Wildcats on March 10.

The Marietta, Ga. native pitched eight innings, including a complete game shutout against the Lady Wildcats, with four strikeouts and just one walk in two appearances. The 5-5 right-hander finished with a 1-0 record and a save for the week, while giving up no earned runs. Hicks also recorded two hits and an RBI in the games.

Clark Atlanta University third baseman Nicolette Anderson was named SIAC’s East Division Player of the Week. Anderson, a native of Compton, Ca., went 18-for-26 with a homerun, two triples and seven doubles in six games, finishing the week with a .692 batting average and a 1.230 slugging percentage. The 5-foot-4 freshman scored nine runs and drove in four more while finishing with a .730 on-base percentage and a .950 fielding percentage. Anderson and the Lady Panthers finished the week with a 3-3 record, including victories over conference-foes Claflin and Paine.

Earning the SIAC West Division Player of the Week honor was Lane College infielder Diamond Moore, and Stillman College pitcher Ashley Savage was named SIAC West Division Pitcher of the Week. A Clarksville, Tenn. native, Moore also went 18-for-26 from the plate with three homeruns, four doubles and a triple in eight games, finishing with a .692 batting average and a 1.100 slugging percentage for the week. The 5-11 freshman had 19 RBI and scored 12 runs, while finishing with a .709 on-base percentage for the week, helping lead the Lady Dragons to a 6-2 record with two wins over Rust and four wins over conference-foe LeMoyne-Owen College.

Savage had strong week with 23 strikeouts and just two walks in 17 innings, including two complete games and a shutout, to earn her third weekly honor this season. The 5-foot-3 sophomore from Alabaster, Ala., finished with a 3-0 record, including wins against Lane and Tuskegee (twice), and a 0.82 ERA while holding hitters to a .154 batting average. On the season, Savage is 8-2 as a starter with a 3.31 ERA and 74 strikeouts.

Hicks and the Lady Rams will play at Alabama A&M University on March 14, before competing in the SIAC Cross-over Tournament in Jasper, Ala. on March 15-17.

Albany State to host Alice Coachman Invitational Track Meet March 31

Written by Edythe Bradley

Albany State University will host the 20th Annual Alice Coachman Invitational Track Meet on Saturday, March 31, at ASU’s Robert Cross Track and Field Complex and Hugh Mills Stadium Complex in Albany, Ga.

The hammer throw competition, followed by the javelin throw, is slated to start at 8 a.m. at the ASU complex. The men and women’s 3000-meter steeplechase will be held at the Mills Complex at11 a.m. All other track and field events, starting with the long jump events, will begin at 11 a.m. at the recently resurfaced Albany State facility. The 4×100-meter relay events will start at 11:30 a.m. The awards ceremony will be held at the conclusion of the meet.

Sponsored by the ASU women and men’s track and field programs, the meet will feature world-class athletes from some of the top collegiate teams and unattached athletes in the Southeast. Several teams, including Columbus State University and Edward Waters College, along with several SIAC teams, including Morehouse College, Stillman College and Paine College, are expected to compete.

ASU athletes, including throwers CreeAnn Perkins and Patrick Jordan, runners Brittany Carter and Tabareyon Jones, pole vaulters Briana Bowles and Timothy Jackson and hurdlers Irrion Conaler and Jordan Thompson, are favored to take top honors in the track and field events.

The annual track meet is held in honor of Alice Coachman-Davis, the first African American woman to win an Olympic gold medal. Coachman-Davis made history and gained international attention by capturing the high jump title with a record-setting jump of 5′ 6 1/8″ during the 1948 Olympic Games in London.

While the 1948 games catapulted her to international acclaim and the first endorsement among African-American women, she had proven herself as a major track and field force in prior years. She won 10 consecutive U.S. titles in the high jump and national titles at 50-meters, 100-meters and as a member in the 400-meter relay on the Tuskegee championship team. Many believe she would have dominated the 1940 and 1944 Summer Games, which were cancelled because of World War II.

The Albany, Ga., native attended Tuskegee University, but earned her bachelor’s degree from Albany State (College) after returning from the 1948 games. As a collegian, she was a member of three Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) championship basketball teams. She dominated Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) competitions in the high jump. From 1938 to 1948, she won 10 consecutive AAU high jump titles.

In 1994, she established the Alice Coachman Track and Field Foundation, a nonprofit organization that assists both young athletes and retired Olympians.

Written by Edythe Bradley

The Albany State University Golden Rams have unveiled their football schedule for the 2012 season, ASU Athletics Director Richard H. Williams and head coach Mike White announced Thursday afternoon. Highlighting the 10-game slate are three classic games and three games against non-conference opponents, including match-ups against two teams that made appearances in the 2011 NCAA Division II football playoffs.

“Albany State has set a very rigorous, action-packed schedule that will both challenge the Golden Rams on the gridiron and one that will offer our fans much excitement,” said Dr. Williams. “Our Golden Rams are ready to deliver great football action this season.”

The Golden Rams, who finished their 2011 season at 8-4, will kick off the season on Sept. 1 at home against the North Greenville University Crusaders in the Dr. Joseph Wintroph Holley Memorial Game, ASU’s first home game each season which honors ASU founder and first president, at the Albany State University Coliseum. North Greenville, an affiliate with the South Atlantic Conference, went 11-3 last season and advanced to the third round of the 2011 NCAA Division II playoffs. The Crusaders beat ASU 63-14 in the first round of the playoffs last season.

The Golden Rams will hit the road to Wingate, N.C. to take on the Wingate University Bulldogs the following weekend. At 2-0 against the Bulldogs, the Golden Rams will play for the first time at Wingate’s Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on Sept. 8. Albany State defeated the Bulldogs 49-28 in regular season play in 2011, and won 30-28 in second-round action of the 2010 NCAA football playoffs. WIngate was 5-6 overall last season.

Week three of ASU’s schedule will have the Golden Rams on the road for a return trip to North Carolina. The Golden Rams will face CIAA runner-up Elizabeth City State University in their first-ever meeting on Sept. 15. The Vikings finished the 2011 season at 8-4, including a 44-0 loss to California University-PA in the opening round of the NCAA playoffs.

Albany State will open SIAC play at home in the ASU Coliseum on Sept. 22 against the Miles College Golden Bears, who finished the 2011 season at 7-5. The Golden Rams defeated the Golden Bears 34-27 in regular-season play, but lost to Miles 17-20 in the first-ever SIAC football championship game. The Miles game is the first of three West Division crossover games.

Another long road trip is scheduled for Sept. 29, as the Golden Rams travel to Frankfort, Ky. to face the Kentucky State University Thorobreds. Albany State defeated the SIAC West Division opponents 59-31 last season in both teams’ first appearances in the 28th Annual Circle City Classic at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.

The 2012 Music City Classic will feature the Golden Rams against the Lane College Dragons. The 100 Black Men of Macon-Middle Georgia will sponsor the game at Henderson Stadium in Macon, Ga.on Oct. 6. The Golden Rams look to avenge a 24-26 upset loss to the West Division Dragons. The game will count as a home game for the Golden Rams.

The Golden Rams will face the first of SIAC East Division opponents on Oct. 13 as they face the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College at B.T. Harvey Stadium in Atlanta, Ga. Albany State defeated Morehouse 25-15 in the 2011 contest. Albany State will celebrate Homecoming 2012 and honor senior student-athletes when the Golden Rams play the Clark Atlanta University Panthers on Oct. 20. ASU beat CAU 19-13 in 2011.

Darton College golf signs five

Written by David Mann

Darton College head golf coach Bill Jones signed five incoming freshmen student-athletes to his 2012-2013 roster in a ceremony today at Darton.

Taylor Martin, of Braselton, JP Pearce, of Jacksonville, Fla., Von Stripling, of Moultrie, Madison Turner, of Canton, and Tyler Vaughn, of Douglas, all signed National Letters Of Intent to Darton College, which is currently ranked No. 4 in NJCAA D-I golf.

“With three NJCAA national championships won, and having 10-straight Region XVII titles, excellence is expected at Darton College,” Jones said. “We are proud to announce these players today, and look forward to their growth, both academically and athletically, here at Darton College, and the continued success of our golf program.”

Pearce, son of Jeff and Jennifer, brings Junior Amateur playing experience and was first-team all-conference at Sandalwood High School in Jacksonville.

“He’s really solid – definitely a (NCAA) D-I caliber player,” Jones said. “We might be able to turn him into a big-time stud – maybe like Joe (Sakulpolphaisan, Darton sophomore, ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA).”

Turner comes to Darton from Milton High School, whose golf team placed second at the Georgia state high school championships in 2011. He is the son of Jill and Chad, and brother to Ren, Sam and Adeline.

Martin, who, like Turner, is from the Atlanta area, attends Mill Creek High School, where he was the low medalist at the state championships. He is the son of Michael and Lori, and brother of Garrett.

“I’ve been recruiting my Atlanta kids for a while now and both visited our campus this past fall,” Jones said. “They – well all of my Georgia recruits – are among top 30 in the state, according to the junior golf rankings.”

Stripling is a merit scholar at Colquitt County High School in Moultrie and plans to major in engineering at Darton. He is the son of Lavon and Beth, and brother to Lauren, Anna and Eli.

Vaughn is an honor graduate at Coffee High School in Douglas. He is the son of Andy and Carole, and brother of Andrea and Melissa.

“There’s always some good local talent in South Georgia,” Jones said, referring to Vaughn and Stripling. “Evening if they’re not ranked that high, it may be because they haven’t played in some of the big-time tournaments – which doesn’t mean they don’t have the talent. They’ll be big time next year.”

Jones said that each of these student-athletes was hand-picked to continue the success that the Darton College golf program has enjoyed season after season.

“They’re all solid,” he said. “We don’t have a weak link anywhere among these five.”
