<p>Katie McMillan Gunter, 67 of Albany died Sunday May 20, 2012 at Willson Hospice House.</p>
<p>Funeral services will be Thursday 11 a.m. at Kimbrell-Stern. Rev. Greg Davis will be officiating. Entombment will follow at Crown Hill Mausoleum Chapel.</p>
<p>A native of Nashville, Ga. Mrs. Gunter has lived most of her life in Albany where she was a member of Central Baptist Church and owner of The Tax Shop. Mrs. Gunter’s passion was travel, and she loved taking her grandkids to the beach. She loved to work in her yard and prided herself on keeping an immaculate yard. Mrs. Gunter was known for being very independent, social and having an outgoing personality. Most of all, she will always be remembered for the love and dedication she gave to her daughter and grandchildren.</p>
<p>Survivors include her daughter, Haley G. King of Albany, grandchildren, Mason and Savannah King of Albany, brother, E.D. McMillan of Nashville, Ga. and sister, Emma Jean Hendley of Tifton, Ga..</p>
<p>The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Kimbrell-Stern.</p>

<p>Alma Smith Brown, 80, of Baconton, Ga. died Friday May 18, 2012 at Pelham Parkway Nursing Home.</p>
<p>A graveside funeral service will be held Monday 3 p.m. at Crown Hill Cemetery.  Rev. Steven Hurley will be officiating.  The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at Kimbrell-Stern one hour before service.</p>
<p>Born in Clinch, County Mrs. Brown lived in Albany since 1969 where she retired from Flint River Textile in 1985.  She was preceded in death by her husband Jewell Brown in 1995.</p>
<p>Survivors include her daughter Gloria B. Stevens and her husband Terry of Baconton; a son Alvin Brown and his wife Anita of Leesburg; a brother Fred Earl Smith of Valdosta; grandchildren Terry Stevens Jr., Khristal Stevens, Terry Lee Stevens, Travis Moore, Joshua Brown, Jeffrey Brown, Michael Fogerty, Dewayne Fogerty, Ketra Cunningham and 13 great-grandchildren.</p>

<p>James A, Wilson, 94, of Albany, GA died May 14, 2012 at his residence. A funeral mass was conducted Friday, May 18 at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church.  Rev. Finbarr Stanton officiated.</p>
<p>A native of Mescaline, Iowa, Mr. Wilson had resided in Albany since 1959 moving from Boynton Beach, Fla. He was retired from Adams AGRI Machinery Company and was a retired MSGT in the Air Force serving during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Wilson was a member of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and a member of American Legion Post # 30.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Sievers Wilson, son, Sgt. Gerald L. Wilson, daughter-in-law, Vanda B. Wilson, two grandchildren, Gerald (Jerry) Wilson Jr. and David (Davy) Wilson.</p>
<p>Survivors include his children, James G. Wilson of Spanaway, Wash., Alvin ”Chip” Wilson (Carolyn) of Leesburg, Ga., Shirley Wilson of Albany, Michael Wilson (Joan) of Duluth, Ga., Diane Wilson-Poey (Frank) of Worth County, Ga., Julie Ramsey (Jon Allen) of Albany, and Betty McGee (Barry) of Leesburg, Ga.; a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; niece, Helen Weiershauser.</p>
<p>The family would like to give a special “Thank You” to, Terry Bowman, Steve Garner and Albany Community Hospice for the personal care and concern they have shown our father.</p>

<p><strong>Joseph Thomas Smith, 83</strong></p>
<p>Joseph Thomas Smith, 83, of Albany, Ga., died May 15, 2012 at his residence. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 18 at Mathews Funeral Home, 3206 Gillionville Road. Rev. Leigh Ann Raynor and Rev. Nancy Scarbrough officiated. Committal services will be conducted at Andersonville National Cemetery; Andersonville, Ga. with Rev. William Collins officiated. Military honors will follow.</p>
<p>Mr. Smith received a B.S. in Economics from St. Peter’s College, a Masters in Education Administration from St. Michael’s college, and a Ph.D. in Educational Management from Florida State University. Mr. Smith, a retired Marine Corps Lt. Col., and veteran of the Korean and Viet Nam conflicts, was decorated during military service by the United States and foreign governments.  His awards include the Legion of Merit with Combat “V”, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and Staff Service Honor Medal. He is a graduate of the Naval War College.</p>
<p>In addition to his military service, Mr. Smith was a retired educator who taught at regional colleges and local school systems. His memberships included the local community action committee, Porterfield UMC Alpha Sunday School class and XYZ club, Golden K Kiwanis Club, Southwest Georgia Genealogical Society, Baker County Historical Society, the Southwest Georgia Retired Officers Association, the Marine Corps League, and the American Legion, Post 30, Albany, Ga.</p>
<p>Mr. Smith, originally from Newark, N.J., is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gloria Parr Smith, his daughter, Kathryn S. Hanks and husband Jim, his son Steven P. Smith and wife Stephanie, and his grandchildren Ivy Hanks, Chad Hanks, Stewart Hanks, Davis Smith, and Collier Smith. He is preceded in death by his son Michael B. Smith.</p>
<p>The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Linda Cutts and Jessica Broner for their devoted care of Mr. Joe.</p>

<p>A native of Atlanta, GA, Mrs. Harris had resided in Albany, GA since 1968 moving from Savannah, GA. She was a homemaker and a member of The First Baptist Church of Albany.  Mrs. Harris helped Dr. Thomas Mitchum open his office and was formerly employed with the Internal Revenue Service.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam B. Harris and a grandson, Tyler R. Harris.</p>
<p>Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Suzanne and John Thomas of Albany, a son and his wife, Kelly and Sandy Harris of Peachtree City, Ga., a sister and her husband, Rhonette and Bill Coleman of Milledgeville, Ga., three grandchildren, Bradley Harris of Tifton, Ga., Merridith Thomas of Atlanta, and Melanie Geiszler and her husband, Scott of Boston, Mass., a special caretaker, Bobbie Edwards of Albany, and her dog, Minnie Rho Rho.</p>

<p>Fay Nadrich, 100, of Albany, died Thursday at Century Pines.</p>
<p>Her funeral service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Kimbrell-Stern with interment to follow at Riverside Cemetery.  David Stern will officiate.</p>
<p>Mrs. Nadrich was born in New York, N.Y. and moved to Albany in 2004.  She had lived most of her life in the New York area, moving to Ft. Lauderdale in 1992.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Nadrich, a son, Stanley Nadrich, and a granddaughter, Karen Nadrich.</p>
<p>She is survived by her son, Norman Nadrich and his wife Leslie, Albany; a sister:  Muriel Mines of California; a daughter-in-law:  Ruth Nadrich, Buffalo, N.Y.; 7 grandchildren:  Randy Nadrich and his wife Suzanne, Camilla, Ga., Pam Klein and her husband Ron, N. Miami, Fla., Todd Nadrich and his wife Stephanie, W. <p>Melvin Lynn Wylie, of Albany, died Thursday, May 17, 2012.  His Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m., Monday, May 18, 2012 at Porterfield United Methodist Church with Rev. Leigh Ann Raynor and Rev. William Collins officiating. Visitation will be held 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Kimbrell Stern Funeral Home.</p>
<p>Born October 2, 1936 in Rosemark, Tenn., to the late Melvin and Wilna Dunavant Wylie, Lynn graduated from University of Tennessee where he received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Agricultural Engineering.  He was a member and officer of FarmHouse Fraternity there and remained an avid UT fan throughout his adult life.   After college graduation, Lynn served in the US Army as a helicopter pilot, most notably flying the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea in 1962.</p>
<p>Lynn and his wife, Kay, moved to Albany in 1966, where Lynn worked as an engineer at Lilliston Corporation.  He served as Vice-President of Engineering until the plant closed in 1986, then continued his engineering career as a contract engineer with Technical Associates after that time.    Known for his engineering knowledge and expertise in designing farm equipment at both Butler Manufacturing and Lilliston Corp., he also shared this knowledge with other engineers through his leadership in the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, Farm and Industrial Equipment Institute, and the American Society for Testing and Materials.</p>
<p>Lynn was active in the Exchange Club of Albany serving in leadership roles as President, Vice-President and Treasurer over the years.  He was selected as Mr. Exchange in 1970, and also served on the Board of Directors of the Exchange Club Fair of Southwest Georgia.  He was actively involved with Boy Scout Troop 111 and helped build several Habitat for Humanity homes.</p>
<p>Lynn and Kay joined Porterfield United Methodist Church in 1966 when moving to Albany, and over the years Lynn served in leadership roles as Chairman of the Board and Chairman of Board of Trustees as well as working  with Porterfield’s youth groups.  Lynn’s greatest pleasure was spending time with family and friends and he was passionate about his love of nature, especially enjoying time in the mountains, camping and hiking.</p>
<p>Survivors include Kay, his wife of fifty years; one daughter, Sherri Wylie and her husband, Sam Hardin of Roswell, Ga.; two sons, Roger Wylie and his wife, Daiva Tautvydas, of Seattle, Wash.,  and Cliff Wylie and his wife, Neema Amatya, of Kirkland, Wash..  He is survived by five grandchildren, Beth Wylie-Hardin, Zach Wylie-Hardin, Asta Wylie, Aidan Wylie, Ryn Wylie; step-grandson, Sam Hardin IV; his sister and brother-in-law, Wilna and Dick Lovett of Beaufort, S.C., and sister-in-law and husband, Martha Jo and David Owen of Eads, Tenn.; three nieces and one nephew.</p>
<p>Lynn was preceded in death by his parents, Wilna and Melvin Wylie, his brother, Don Wylie and sister, Karen Wylie.</p>

<p>Robert S. Castleberry, 77, of Leesburg, Ga., died May 11, 2012 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.  Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Mathews Funeral Home.  Pastor John Powell will officiate.  Interment will follow in Providence Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Worth County, Ga.</p>
<p>A native of Doles, Ga., Mr. Castleberry was born to the late Aubrey and Lilah Houston Castleberry.  He grew up in Doles and attended Albany High School and graduated from Sylvester High School.  After graduation, he attended Georgia Southwestern College and served in the United States Navy.</p>
<p>Mr. Castleberry was employed with Bell South Telephone Company as an electronic technician for thirty seven years and was a lifetime member of The AT&amp;T Pioneers.  He was a Baptist by faith and was a member of The Loyal Order of The Moose.  He was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne Castleberry.</p>

<p>Guy Knighton, 57, of Lee County, Ga. died May 10, 2012 at Phoebe North Medical Center.  Funeral services will be held Monday, May 14, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Mathews Funeral Home.  Rev. Ken Chancellor will officiate.</p>
<p>A native of Hilton, Ga., Guy had resided in Lee County for the past fifteen years moving from Albany. He was a Paper Technician at Procter and Gamble and was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church, member of Georgia Sportsman Club and Loyal Order of Moose. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ned Alvin Knighton and Addie Elaine White Knighton.</p>
<p>Survivors include a son, Samuel Guy Knighton Jr., a daughter, Kaili Wren Hickle both of Lee County, Ga.; sister and husband, Patricia and Jim Houston of Lee County, Ga.; two nephews, Brian Wester of Valdosta, Ga. and Blake Wester of Savannah, Ga.; Step-mother, Betty Jean Knighton of Albany, a dear friend, Pam Griffin of Lee County, Ga.</p>

<p>James H. “Diamond Jim” Langdale, 82, of Albany, died Saturday May 12, 2012 at the Willson Hospice House.</p>
<p>Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, May 14, 2012 at the Crown Hill Mausoleum with visitation preceding the service at 1 p.m.  Rev. John Spencer and Mr. Ross Powell will officiate.</p>
<p>A native of Plant City Fla., Mr. Langdale lived in Albany the past several years and attended Sherwood Baptist Church.  He was a retired, a surveyor with the US Army Corps of Engineers.          James was preceded in death by his parents Clayton and Ouida Price Langdale and a daughter, Joan Langdale.</p>
<p>He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Langdale; his four daughters:  Barbara Sutton, Linda Langdale, June and her husband Bud Newlum, and Celia Reyes, his son, James and his wife Tracey Langdale; ten grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren, his brother, Don Beach and wife Lou Anna; his two sisters: LaVon and her husband Skip Nichols, and Marie Whisman; several nieces and nephews.</p>

<p>Janelle B. Eubanks, 71, of Leesburg, Ga. died May 13, 2012 at Willson Hospice House.  Graveside funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m.  at the Leesburg City Cemetery.  Rev. Bobby Moye will officiate.</p>
<p>Mrs. Eubanks was a native and lifelong resident of Leesburg, Ga. and was born to the late Lawrence W. and Leslie Wisener Breeden. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amber Eubanks and a sister, Valerie Breeden. She played basketball at Lee County High School and retired from Twin Oaks Elementary School where she was the cafeteria manager.  Mrs. Eubanks was a member of Kinchafoonee Baptist Church and the Loyal Order of the Moose # 1285.  She was an emeritus member of the Order of The Eastern Star, Crepe Myrtle Chapter # 163 and past president of the V.F.W. # 2785 Ladies Auxiliary.</p>
<p>Survivors include her husband of fifty five years, Neal Eubanks, a daughter, June L Eubanks (Richard Johnson), two sons and their wives, Calvin N. (Rachel) Eubanks Jr. and Melvin W. (Misti) Eubanks, a brother, Larry Breeden and his wife, Catherine, all of Leesburg, Ga., three sisters, Nancy Eubanks of Crisp County, Ga., Cherry Ivey and her husband, Robert of Greenville, S.C. and Myra McKinnon of Oklahoma and six grandchildren, Erin A. Eubanks, Calvin N. Eubanks III, Janelle L. Eubanks, Walker K. Johnson, Keely D. Eubanks and Kylie S. Eubanks all of Leesburg, Ga.</p>

<p>A native of Ozark, Ala., Mr. Spurlock was a resident of Georgetown, GA for many years and a resident of Albany, GA for fifty years.  He was a US Army veteran of the Korean War, attended Bethel Holiness Tabernacle and retired from Georgia Pacific after thirty five years.</p>
<p>Survivors include his wife, Margaret Ann Spurlock of Leesburg, Ga., two daughters and their husbands, Bettina and Jake Dukes, Jr. of Leesburg, Ga., Tonia John Bentley of Leesburg, Ga., a son, Andy Spurlock of Albany, a sister, Pearl Richardson of Midland City, Ala., two brothers, Robert Spurlock of Dothan, Ala. and Paul Spurlock of Eufaula, Ala., eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.</p>

<p>Douglas Taylor Bailey, 14, of Leesburg, Ga., died May 7, 2012 at Medical Center of Central Georgia. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, May 12 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Leesburg, Leesburg, Ga. Rev. Wesley Kaylor, Jeremy (Bobby) Jones and Melissa Spriggs will officiate. Interment will follow in Leesburg Cemetery, Leesburg, Ga.</p>
<p>Born in Albany on October 23, 1997, Taylor was an eighth grade student in the Lee County School System. He was active in Lee County Dixie League Baseball for six years and had the opportunity to go to the national play offs with the Cubs, under the direction of coaches, Joey Pickle, Stevie Williams and Roger Wingate. Taylor loved to fish with his “Idols”, Bill Price and Shorty Pollock, he was a computer genius, he loved being with his family and loved to assist his niece with her homework and he was learning to play the acoustical guitar. He was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Jack Bailey Sr. and Helen Bailey and maternal grandmother, Linda Diane Anderson.</p>
<p>Survivors include his parents, Doug and Dana Watson Bailey, Leesburg, Ga., a brother, Michael Bailey, Virginia, a sister, Crystal (Sissy) Marie Reese, Leesburg, Ga., maternal grandparents, Wayne Watson Sr. and Pat Watson, Cuthbert, Ga., a nephew, William Edward Reese Jr., a niece, Brooke Anne Reese and his cat, Sponge.</p>

<p>Joe Beard, 75, of Albany died Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Wynfield Park Health and Rehab. Memorial services will be held Sunday May 13, 2012 at 3 p.m. at Mathews Funeral Home.</p>
<p>A native of Troy, Ala., Mr. Beard had resided in Albany since 1957 moving here from Morgan, Ga.. He was a graduate of Morgan High School in 1953 where he was active on the basketball team, was the quarterback for the football team and still holds the state record for reed vaulting.</p>
<p>Mr. Beard worked with Western Electric for a number of years before starting his own company, Albany Telephone Service Company.</p>
<p>He was a member of the Morgan United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Holman Beard, his parents and four sisters.</p>
<p>Survivors include a son, Gary Beard, a daughter, Gayle B. Woolard and her husband Stephen, a brother, Bill Beard and his wife, Janet and a grandchild, Walker Woolard all of Albany.</p>

<p>A native of Patmos, Ga., Mrs. Chatman had resided in Albany most of her life before moving to Lee County twenty years ago. She was employed as a supervisor with Shoney’s Restaurant on Broad Avenue in Albany for many years and retired from the Lee County School system. Mrs. Chatman was a Baptist by faith.</p>
<p>Survivors include two daughters, Janet L. Draper and her husband, Lane and Deborah Langford and a son, Terry G. Bowman, all of Leesburg, Ga., five brothers, J.C. Kimbrell and his wife, Irma of Shellman, Ga., Dorsey Kimbrell and his wife Elizabeth of Hopewell, Va., Allen Kimbrell of Ft. Gaines, Ga. and Pearson Kimbrell of Albany, three sisters, Eunice Carter of West Palm Beach, Fla., Mary Sellers Layman and her husband, Clyde of Unadilla, Ga. and Ruth Whiting and her husband, Julian of Albany, four grandchildren, Bobby Wayne Ethridge, Shauna Layne Graham and her husband, Jason, Tim Langford and Derby Tangwall all of Leesburg, Ga. and Brandon Lane Draper and his wife, Amanda of Acworth, Ga., five great-grandchildren, Marlee Graham, Kylee Graham, Tanner Graham, Brantley Langford and Neila Langford. <p>Ricky Jay Bowden, 54 of Lovers Lane Road in Dawson died May 3, 2012 at his residence.</p>
<p>Funeral services will be Saturday 4 p.m. at Sasser United Methodist Church, Rev. Wesley Kaylor officiating. Interment will follow in Eastview Cemetery in Cuthbert, Ga.</p>
<p>A native of Albany, Mr. Bowden has lived in Terrell Co.; Ga. since the early 1980’s where he was a member of Sasser United Methodist Church. He was formerly employed with Carlton Co. in Albany for 17 years. Some of Ricky’s enjoyment in life was bass fishing, playing his guitar and playing drums for a local band. Ricky had a kind and gentle spirit, and a great sense of humor. He will always be remembered for the love he gave to his family, especially his new granddaughter, Adison.</p>
<p>Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Dwaine H. Bowden of Dawson, daughter, Blayke Bowden Usry and her husband Pierce of Dawson, granddaughter, Adison M. Usry of Dawson, mother, Grace D. Bowden of Albany, brother, Harold Dwayne Bowden of Albany and sister, Rita B. Hall and her husband  James of Albany.</p>
<p>Mr. Bowden was preceded in death by his father, Reed Harold Bowden.</p>

<p>A native of Pitts, Ga., Mrs. Bell had resided in Albany, GA before moving to Lee Co., GA thirty years ago.  She was a member of the Albany Primitive Baptist Church and was the former owner of Miss Bessie’s Store.  Mrs. Bell was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Ward Bell, three brothers, H.G. Owens, L.S. Owens and Jim Owens and two sisters, Thelma Benson and Evelyn Onspaugh.</p>
<p>Survivors include two sons, John Bell of Madison, Ala. and James Bell and his wife, Chan of Sale City, Ga., four grandchildren, Capt. John Bell, CWO Derek Bell, Jeb Bell and Bob Bell. Five great-grandchildren, Conner Bell, Anthony Bell, Charlie Bell, Owen Bell and Aidyn Bell.</p>

<p>A lifelong resident of Albany, Ga., Mr. Ellis graduated from Albany High School in 1979 and was a supervisor with the City of Albany.  He was a member of The Pointe and Grand Island Country Club. Scott was an avid fisherman and was a member of the Albany Bass’n Buddies.  He was preceded in death by his father, Earl Ellis and his brother, Mark Ellis.</p>

<p>Narindra Nath Lakhanpal, known to almost everyone as &#8220;Paul&#8221;, passed away in peace on April 28, 2012 in Albany. The son of Hari Datt and Satyavati Sharma, he was born January 12, 1932, in Sujanpur, India.</p>
<p>He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 48 years Anand Lakhanpal; son Sanjiv Lakhanpal of Austin, Texas; son Naresh Lakhanpal and daughter-in-law Sydney McDole of Dallas, Texas; son and daughter-in-law , Suresh and Elizabeth Lakhanpal; brother Dharam Sharma of Framingham, Mass.; and grandchildren Michael, Jordan and Kimberly McDole; Abigail Lakhanpal and Cameron Lakhanpal. He was preceded in death by his parents, older brother Satyapal Pandit and sister Savitri Samnotra.</p>
<p>A graduate of McGill University in electrical engineering, he had a successful career with Northern Electric, Mitre, GTE Sylvania, and Rockwell Collins before becoming President of Dallas, Texas based Telecom Planning Group. A passionate engineer and visionary his work led to advances in modern telecommunications. He and his wife lived in Dallas for 35 years.</p>
<p>He will be known as a self-made man combining an inquisitive nature and boyish grin with grit and determination, leading to a full life filled with travel, gardening and discovery. He was a life member of the IEEE, routinely being recognized for his active leadership. As former president of the Arya Samaj group of the DFW Hindu temple he was active in the DFW Indian American community. However, his most enduring legacy will be his guiding light to those he touched in his desire for all of us to fulfill our potential.</p>

<p><strong>Billy Kemp Stewart Sr., 77</strong><strong></strong></p>
<p>Billy Kemp Stewart Sr., 77, of 5304 Doles Road, Albany, Ga., passed away at his residence Saturday, April 28, 2012, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Mathews Funeral Home. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at Olive Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Iron City, Ga.</p>
<p>Mr. Stewart was born October 11, 1934 in Vindex, Maryland to William Albert and Opal Tasker Stewart. He was educated in the Garrett County School System, after which he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He graduated recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina, after then he went to Korea and mainland Japan. He spent many years at Camp LeJeune, N.C. where in 1964 he broke the range record for rifles with a 242 out of a possible 250. For his efforts he was named Leatherneck of the Quarter for which he received a cash award and an M-70 rifle. He was an Engineer by Military Occupation Specialty and operated all types of heavy equipment.</p>

<p>In 1967 he was sent to Viet Nam. He cleared roads by sweeping for mines, graded for runways being built and excavated reservoirs. He helped construct a Viet Nam village at MCB, Quantico upon his return. He earned a Navy Commendation with Combat V to add to his other medals. He also was on active duty at Marine Base Quantico, Okinawa, Marine Corps Supply Activity, Philadelphia, and in 1974 retired from Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, N.C.  In 1975 he began work as a Civilian Marine and relocated to Marine Corps Base, Albany where he retired again in 1989.</p>
<p>Mr. Stewart was a member of VFW Post #2785 where he served as Commander 1983-84. In the position he helped the post to become an All-American Post for the first time which caused him to receive a personal award as an All-State and All-American Post Commander. He is also a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose #1285; Disabled American Veterans #27; BPO # 2481; American Legion Post #71; East Albany Chapter AARP; the Marine Corps Engineer Association; Third Marine Division and the Marine Corps League #1260. Mr. Stewart was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Cheryl Lynn Stewart, his brother, Franklin Albert Stewart and his sister Sandra Darlene Stewart.</p>
<p>He is survived by his wife, Cherry Parker Stewart, Albany, a daughter , Sandra Hancock and her husband, Wayne, Albany, a son, Billy Kemp Stewart Jr., Anderson, Ind., two step-sons, Joe Miller and his wife, Gwen, Albany, and Chuck Miller and his wife Polly, Iron City, Ga., a sister, Kathy Savage and her husband George, Huntingtown, Md., a brother James Stewart and his wife Sandy, a stepmother, Kathern Stewart, all of Oakland Md., his grandchildren Wayne Hancock Jr., Albany, Danny Hancock and his wife Kerri, Sylvester, Ga., Ericka Adams and her husband Nick, Joey Miller and his wife Jessica all of Donalsonville, Ga., Amber Miller, Tampa, Fla., Jason Miller, Albany, Ga., Stacy Hodges and her husband Kris, Yokoda Air Force Base, Japan, his great-grandchildren, Riley Hancock, Isabelle Hancock, Brodey Hancock, AnnaBelle Adams, Beau Adams, Kabe Hodges, Maggie McCall Miller and the mother of his children, Elizabeth Marie Stewart, Albany.</p>

<p>A native of Carmi, Ill., Mrs. Nix had resided in Albany, since 1976 moving from Key West, Fla. She was a self-employed master cosmetologist at Southern Styles and a member of Beacon Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin Eugene Cleveland and Frances Ruth Montgomery and a brother, Billy Wayne Cleveland.</p>

<p>Claude Lemount Mossburg, of Albany died Friday, April 20, 2012, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday April 28, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Byne Memorial Baptist Church with military honors. Dr. Matthews Nance will officiate.</p>
<p>A native of Liberty Center, Ind., Mr. Mossburg had resided in Bluffton, Ind. most of his life. Claude graduated from Bluffton High School in 1942 and entered the US. Navy during WW II, he served as a ship’s deck gunner in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He participated in six convoy crossings of the Atlantic, as well as ships’ ports of call in England, Italy, the Azors and Okinawa. After the war, he attended Indiana Technical College under the GI Bill, where he studied engineering. After graduation, he was employed by Franklin Electric Company, where he worked in the drafting department for forty two years.</p>
<p>He was a member of Hope Missionary Church in Bluffton, Ind. and a member of Byne Memorial Baptist Church, Albany. His favorite hobbies included gardening and bowling. He actively bowled in various bowling leagues until he turned 86.</p>
<p>Survivors include his wife, Betty J. Mossburg, Albany, a daughter and her husband, Sandy Wingard and Col. Joe Wingard, USMC (Ret.), Albany, a grandson, Lucus Wingard, Albany and a granddaughter and her husband, Rachel Wingard Rodriquez and Juan Rodriquez, Atlanta.</p>

<p><strong>Billy L. Hammack Sr. 86</strong><strong></strong></p>
<p>Billy L. Hammack Sr., 86, of Hoschton, Ga., formerly of Albany, died Saturday, April 21, 2012 at Oconee Hospice of the Foothills, Seneca, S.C., following a long battle with lung cancer. Funeral services were held Thursday, April 26 at Mathews Funeral Home with military honors. Rev. Russell Anglin and Rev. Charlie Rouse officiated. A private interment followed in Hillcrest Cemetery, Sylvester, Ga.</p>
<p>A native of Albany, Mr. Hammack had resided in the Del Webb community of the Village at Deaton Creek in Hoschton, Ga. since late 2009. He was retired from the Air Force and was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, seven sisters and his wife, Edna Nadine Hammack.</p>
<p>Mr. Hammack served two years in the US Army during WW II, stationed in Germany. He later joined the US Air Force and had a 20-year career, stationed in Georgia, Florida, Texas and France. He achieved the rank of Sr. Master Sergeant and at one time was Crew Chief of the Skyblazers, the Air Force aerial acrobatics team in Europe. While in the Air Force, he also served a tour in Vietnam.</p>
<p>Survivors include one sister, Lillie Hathcock, Lawrenceville, Ga.; two daughters, Brenda Rutledge (Harold), Walhalla, S.C., Beverly Brigman, Pensacola, Fla., three sons: Larry Hammack (Barbara), Montclair, Va., Billy Hammack Jr., Huntsville, Ala., and Tony Hammack (Tania), Albany;  eleven grandchildren: Brent Oglesby (Joanna), Lilburn, Ga., Tiffany Kollander (Mike), Conway, Ark., Jason Brigman (Laura), The Woodlands, Tex., Jeff Brigman (Christy), Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Kelly Ulloa (Richard), Pensacola, Fla., Stephanie Jones (Joshua), Virginia Beach, Va., David Hammack, Arlington, Va., Krystye Hollis (James), Albany, Todd Hammack, Albany, Chris Hammack, St. Augustine, Fla., and Devan Hammack, Albany; fourteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.</p>

<p>Bettye Jean Bass Mann, 82, of Albany died April 25, 2012 at her residence.  Funeral services for Mrs. Mann were held on Friday April 27 at The First Baptist Church in Albany.  Interment followed at Crown Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Butch Knight officiated.</p>
<p>Mrs. Mann was born July 23, 1929 in Lanett, Alabama to the late Homer and Chloe Bishop Bass.  She had lived in Albany since 1965 after moving here from Lexington, Ky. Mrs. Mann was a loving and devoted wife of 63 years, a wonderful mother who cherished her family, a talented cook, a staunch and caring friend, and a long time faithful member of First Baptist Church of Albany.</p>
<p>She is survived by her husband Walter Lewis Mann of Albany, three sons; Michael Mann and wife Diane of Wetumpka, Ala., Gary Mann and wife Debra of Atlanta, Christopher Mann and wife Dawn of Albany, two daughters; Pat Herndon and her husband Martin of Macon and Sherri Mann of Atlanta. Seven grandchildren; Christy Carter, Alison Till, Brad Mann, Ellie Mahon, Laura Mann, Steven Mann and Will Herndon.  Four great-grandchildren Ty Carter, Matthew Carter, Gray Carter and Graham Till also survive.</p>

<p>Edwina W. Mathis, 86, of Leesburg, Ga., died Sunday, April 22, 2012 at Lee County Health Care.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at 3 p.m. at First Free Will Baptist Church.  Rev. <p>She was born in Waycross, Ga. Mrs. Mathis had resided in Albany since 1942 moving from Baker County, Ga. She was the last living charter member of First Free Will Baptist Church where she served as director of their kindergarten program and taught a ladies Sunday School Class. She was a member of Crepe Myrtle Chapter # 163 Order of the Eastern Star where she had served as Worthy Matron. Mrs. Mathis was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Mathis.</p>
<p>Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Hester (Mike) of Gray, Ga., Sharon Woods (Roger) of Albany, a son, Lonnie Mathis (Dorene) of Leesburg, Ga.; six grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren.</p>

<p>Sara Strickland Morgan, 87, formerly of Dawson, Ga. and Pelham, Ga., died Saturday, April 21, 2012 at Lee County Healthcare and Rehabilitation.</p>
<p>Her funeral service was held graveside at the Pelham City Cemetery, Tuesday, April 24.</p>
<p>Mrs. Morgan was born December 19, 1924 in Randolph County to the late Francis Monroe Ferguson and Arrie Sauls Ferguson.  She attended school in Randolph County and was a bookkeeper by profession.  During her career she was employed with International Harvester, Maloofs Clothing Store and with the Terrell County Commission.  She was a devoted member of Dawson United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and was active in the Epworth Sunday School Class.</p>
<p>She was the widow of the late Ben W. Strickland, Sr. of Pelham, Ga. and the late Robert L. “Bud” Morgan of Bronwood, Ga. She was preceded in death by her son, the late Ben W. Strickland Jr. of Albany as well as nine brothers and sisters.</p>
<p>Survivors include her three grandchildren, Ben W. Strickland III and wife Cathy, Lee County, Gina S. Price and husband Jody, Worth County, Blaine Strickland and wife Dawn, Lee County; daughter in law, Gail Strickland Korpal and husband Tom, Albany; brother, Sanford Ferguson, Edison; seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.</p>
<p>The family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff at Lee County Healthcare and Rehabilitation for the care and compassion they gave Mrs. Morgan for the last nine years.</p>

<p>A native of Douglas County, Ga., Mrs. Sadler had resided in Lee County most of her life. She was retired from Merry Acres Motel as Head House keeper and was a Program Assistant with Albany Outreach.  Mrs. Sadler was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church since 1951. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas (Tom) Sadler, her parents, Cleveland Wiggins and Queen Duke Wiggins and two sons, Tommy Sadler and Allen Eugene Sadler, a sister, Evelyn Dudley.</p>
<p>Survivors include a son Frank Thomas Sadler and his wife, Patti of Troy, Ala.; daughter-in-law, Gwen Sadler of Daleville, Ala.; sister Mary Law of Dawson, Ga.; eight grandchildren, Col. <p><strong>Marshall Lynn Hannah Sr., 63</strong><strong></strong></p>
<p>After a courageous struggle with cancer, Marshall Lynn Hannah Sr., 63, of Arlington, Ga., died on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany.</p>
<p>Marshall was born on January 20, 1949, in Little Rock, Ark., to Thomas Lee Hannah and the late Ruth Geraldine Hammons Smith.  He served in the Navy and was a proud veteran of the Vietnam War.  He loved working with wood and gardening, but his favorite pastime was sitting on the front porch, playing backgammon, with his wife.  Marshall was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.  His caring, accepting, and giving nature prompted many throughout his lifetime to regard Marshall as a trusted friend.</p>
<p>Marshall is survived by his wife and best friend of 43 years, Donna Hatcher Hannah of Arlington, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Shelli and Jonathon Dew of Albany; daughter, Paige McKnight of Leesburg, Ga.; son, Marshall Hannah Jr. of Arlington, Ga.; three grandchildren, Cassidi Hannah, Emily McKnight and Logan McKnight; brothers and sisters-in-law, Barrett and Dot Hannah of Senatobia, Miss., Jack and Betty Smith of Wichita, Kansas, Joseph Smith of Senatobia, Miss., and Connie Hatcher of Arlington, Ga.; father and step-mother Thomas Lee and Lavonne Hannah of Eugene, Oregon.</p>
<p>Marshall was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Ruth and Jack Smith of Memphis, Tenn.</p>
<p>A Celebration of Life, for Marshall, will be held Saturday, April 28, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., at Marshall’s home, 47 Greenleaf Ave., Arlington, Ga.</p>

<p>Nicholas (Nick) John Retza Jr., 84, of Albany died Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. A Funeral Mass was conducted Saturday, April 21, 2012 at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church. Rev. Finbarr Stanton officiated. Interment will follow in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. at a later date.</p>
<p>A native of Galveston, Texas, Nick Retza had lived in Albany since 1982 moving from Nashua, N.H. He was a retired MGY SGT from the Marine Corps and received a Business degree from the University of Lowell, Mass.  Nick was a member of St. Teresa’s Catholic Church and was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas John Retza Sr. and Elizabeth Peters Retza, two sisters, Helen Fredrickson and Valerie Craig.</p>
<p>Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Retza of Albany; two daughters, Jennifer M. <p>Nick was born in Galveston, Texas and went to High School in Houston, Texas.  He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1944 at the age of 17 following his father who served with the Marines at Belleau Woods, and four other campaigns in France and the Occupation of Germany with the AEF.  After completing Boot Camp at Paris Island, S.C. and advanced Infantry Training at Camp Lejeune, N.C., he was then assigned to Replacement Draft for the 5th Marine Division then on Iwo Jima.  When his transport refit and trained for the invasion of Japan. He then joined the Reconnaissance Platoon, 28<sup>th</sup> Marine Division at Camp Tarawa on the Big Island of Hawaii.</p>
<p>With the surrender of Japan, when the Atomic Bombs devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki Japan, Retza sailed to Sasebo, Kyushu, Japan with the 5<sup>th</sup> Marine Division to commence the occupation of Japan ant return to the US in August 1946.</p>
<p>After serving with a Reserve Unit, he transferred to the 1<sup>st</sup> Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, Calif.  When the Korean War started in 1950 he sailed with the 1<sup>st</sup> Marine Division for the Inchon, South Korea “landing”.  He was at the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea when the Chinese Communist Forces attacked the United Nations forces in November 1950.  After six campaigns in the Korean War, he returned to the US.</p>
<p>He married his wife Marilyn (from WI) at Camp Lejeune, N.C. and had two daughters, Jennifer and Denise who in turn honored him with two grandchildren followed by four great grandchildren.</p>
<p>Over the years he was stationed at the MCLB, Albany; MQMC, Washington, DC; Okinawa, Japan; MCLB, Philadelphia.  He retired from active duty in 1968 and took a position with Nashua Corporation, Nashua, N.H.  After completing night school courses at various Marine Locations over the years and in Lowell, Mass. he received a Business degree from the University of Lowell, Mass.  He retired from Nashua Corporation in 1981 followed by his final Civilian employment with the Marine Corps Logistics Base, Albany.</p>
<p>Nick was a past President of the Georgia Chapter of Chosin Few.  Also a member of the American Legion and the Marine Corps League.  He then enjoyed many friendships with Marines and civilians and loved to tell “sea stories”.  Semper Fidelis</p>

<p><strong>Richard DeWitt Fowler, 78</strong><strong></strong></p>
<p>Richard DeWitt Fowler, 78 of Albany died April 19, 2012 at Willson Hospice House.</p>
<p>A private family service was held.</p>
<p>A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Mr. Fowler was of the Baptist faith. He was a graduate of Moultrie High School and Georgia Tech. He moved to Albany in 1960 where he worked for Standard Oil Co. and then became self-employed, retiring in real estate.</p>
<p>Survivors include his brother, Lynn C. Fowler and his wife Anne of Decatur, Ala., sisters, Flora Jane Parker of Spartanburg, S.C., Mary Kay Griffin and her husband Gene of Albany and Ann Miles and her husband Herb of St. Simons, Ga., numerous nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Kathryn Griffin.</p>
