Albany, Ga.—Theatre Albany will conduct auditions for the second musical offering of the 2011/2012 Season, “Little Women,” Saturday and Sunday, September 17 and 18 at 2 p.m. at the theatre located at 514 Pine Avenue.

Based on Louisa May Alcott’s own family experiences (and novel), “Little Women,” follows the adventures of Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March as they grow up in Civil War America. The beloved story of the March sisters is timeless and deals with issues as relevant today as when they were written. Now, this wonderful narrative has been brought to life as an exhilarating new musical filled with glorious music, dancing and heart.

Director Mark Costello is looking to cast 4 men (ages 18 and up) for the roles of Laurie, Professor Bhaer, Mr. Laurence and Mr. Brooke and 6 women (ages 16 and up) for the roles of Jo, Amy, Beth, Meg, Marmee and Aunt March.

Persons interested in auditioning should prepare a song to sing; something that shows off the voice, and bring either the sheet music or a CD. An accompanist will be provided. Rehearsals are set to begin in October with performances scheduled for December 8 thru 18. For further information, call the theatre at (229) 439-7193.

This exhibition features works from an array of outsider, folk, and visionary artists from Georgia and Alabama including Howard Finster, Eddie Owens Martin, Mose Tolliver, R.A. Miller, and O.L. Samuels. These self-taught artists are often referred to as outsider artist because they are all thought to exist outside of the mainstream art-world. Each is spurred by unique motivations creating a rich tapestry of work. Inspired by visions or religious experiences, artists like Eddie Owens Martin and Howard Finster attempt to create a utopia on earth. Other artists, like R.A. Miller, O.L. Samuels, and Mose Tolliver, became active after retirement or while recovering from serious injuries. This exhibition illustrates the diversity and complexity of artists working outside of the mainstream

August 1 – August 6
Monday- Friday 9am – 6pm, Saturday 9am – 4pm

Country Inn & Suites
2809 Nottingham Way
Albany, GA 31707

“There was buried treasure in the backyard just waiting to be dug up and the family knew it. So one day the granddaughter decided to excavate what her grandmother, an escapee from an oppressive Russian tsarist rule, put in the dirt years ago. Turns out it was $57,000 worth of Russian gold rubles.”

That’s just one story Colleen Rivera likes to tell. Witnessing such impressive finds is part of her job as a show manager for the Ohio Valley Gold & Silver Refinery’s traveling roadshow.

The Springfield, Ill.-based company is in Albany through Saturday looking to buy precious metals, jewelry, historical artifacts, antiques and other collectibles.

When someone brings in an item, The Ohio Valley Refinery & Roadshow evaluates it, makes an offer, then writes out a check sending that person home with some extra cash. Our job is to find buyers for items. We’re the middle man. We try to find someone in that market interested,” said Jeramy Weese, also a show manager for the Ohio Valley Refinery & Roadshow

Weese said that when an individual brings in an item, the buyers will enter the details into their online system which connects with over 10,000 collectors. Items can range from coin collections to vintage guitars and everything in between. “If we can get someone to generate an offer, they agree to the terms and we give them a check on the spot. However, if more than one collector is interested, the offer can go higher,” explains Weese.

David Ford, a buyer for the company, said he enjoys traveling to different towns each week and finding new and interesting items. Just a few weeks back he had a woman come in who had bought a coin from the casino she worked at for a dollar the night before. She walked out that morning with a check for $50. She joked that this was the quickest $49 dollars she ever made.

So search through your closets and bring down your items to the Country Inn & Suites this week. Chances are, you will walk out with a little extra money in your pocket.

Admission is free to the event. For more questions, call 217.726.7590.

Rock, Roll & Run in Downtown Albany has been selected as one of the Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 Events for March 2012!

We just received this great news regarding the application that was submitted in June. The event highlights all of the Downtown Albany activities the first weekend of March including the Mardi Gras Music Festival, Albany Marathon & ½, the SB&T Bike Race and the Flint RiverQuarium Turtle Race.

With this designation the event will receive extensive exposure in over 1,600 advertisements through newspapers, magazines, web, television and radio in the US and Canada. The listing is also sent to AAA agents to promote to their consumers. The Top 20 Events are listed on the Southeast Tourism Society’s website www.southeasttourism.org and on the consumer website www.escapetothesoutheast.com. The Top 20 Events pages are consistently among the most visited pages on the STS sites.

Lisa Riddle, Albany CVB Director states that “recognition in the STS Top 20 events is big for Albany and will grant advertising, worth thousands of dollars, that otherwise could not be purchased. This designation will hopefully bring more people to town to enjoy the festivities scheduled for March 3, 2012.”
