Freshman Artisha Holston scored a game-high 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Albany State Lady Rams to a win over the Kentucky State Lady Thorobreds, 57-51. With the victory, ASU wins its SIAC opener and improves to 6-2, 1-0 on the season. KSU drops to 4-5, 1-0.
In the first half, Albany State jumped out to an early 18-8 lead. The Lady Rams went cold from the field after that, and Kentucky State was able to tie the game at 25 with 2:14 left in the stanza. A Lady Thorobred three-pointer at the buzzer created a 29-29 tie at halftime.
The Lady Rams regained the lead and held it until the 9:33 mark of the second half when KSU made a free throw to take a 44-43 lead. However, Albany State responded with a 8-0 run to take a 51-44 advantage with 6:23 left in the game. The Lady Rams would not trail for the rest of the contest.
Sophomore Keidra Green scored 14 points and pulled down five rebounds for the Lady Rams. Nicole Wilson added nine points, and point guard Mecca Frost finished with eight points and eight assists. Jillian Anderson had four blocks.
Albany State shot 39.7 (25-63) percent and 38.5 (5-13) percent from the free throw line. The Lady Rams outrebounded KSU 51-41 and recorded a season-high six blocks as a team.
The Lady Rams return to action on Monday, January 6th when they travel to Tuskegee, Alabama to face the Tuskegee University Tigerettes. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. (central time).
