Freshman Artisha Holston recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and added three steals to lead the Albany State Lady Rams past the Benedict College Lady Tigers, 60-50. With the victory, ASU improves to 11-3, 6-1 in the SIAC. The Lady Rams also take over as the top team in the SIAC East Division standings. Benedict, who entered the game atop the SIAC East Division, falls to 12-5, 6-1.

The two teams engaged in a low-scoring, defensive duel in the first half. Benedict only led 8-6 at the 9:50 mark before Kedeemya Cooper tied the game with two free throws. Kourtney Alexander gave the Lady Rams lead, 12-11, with 7:15 remaining in the half. ASU finished the stanza on an 8-4 run to take a 20-15 advantage into intermission.

The Lady Tigers opened the second half with a quick 6-0 run to take a 21-20 lead at the 18:07 mark. Ten seconds later, Alexander gave Albany State the lead again at 22-21 with 17:56 left in regulation. It turned out to be a lead the Lady Rams would not relinquish again.

Another jumper by Alexander with 5:45 remaining provided the Lady Rams with a 47-32 lead, their largest of the game. Benedict did cut the lead to 58-50 with 39 seconds left, but that’s as close as they would get.

Alexander scored a team-high 13 points and pulled down six rebounds. Mecca Frost added 10 points.

The Lady Rams shot 18-55 (32.7%) from the field, 3-18 (16.7%) from three-point range and 21-31 (67.7%) from the free throw line.

The Albany State Lady Rams return to action on Monday, January 20th when they host the Paine College Lady Lion at the ASU HPER Gymnasium. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
