ALBANY, GA- Local organizations ban together in a different way in an effort to share the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with Albany area youth. The 3rd annual Dream Summit takes place Monday, January 20, 2014 at the Albany Civic Center.
The Dream Summit is an annual collaboration of local leaders and businesses who work with counselors from the Dougherty Co. School System to select deserving students to participate in the summit. The Dream Summit prepares students for leadership with workshops and forums centered on Dr. King’s ideals. Participants will attend workshops about economic literacy, communication skills and making wise decisions about their futures.
Newly seated Commissioner BJ Fletcher will be in attendance to welcome the students on behalf of the City of Albany, GA and to speak about the importance of service on this day. She will also invite two deserving participants to attend the 2014 King Day Celebration with her later that evening.
“Dr. King is widely noted for being the best example of a servant leader and would want nothing more than to see local business leaders taking a “day on” instead of a” day off” to make an impact in the lives of youth.” states Sherrell Alexander, executive director of Girls Inc. and one of the organizers of the Dream Summit. “Preparing our youth for success and ensuring that they are equipped with knowledge to make wise decisions that will carry them into adulthood is one of the greatest ways that we feel we can honor Dr. King’s memory on this day.”
This year’s Dream Summit luncheon keynote speaker is Mr. David Wilson who will present his popular Pinpointing your Purpose presentation. Additionally, the Dougherty Co. Sheriff’s department will present a slightly altered version of their noted “Scared Straight:” program. Corporal Anthony Crimbley will feature a presentation with inmates who will talk about how not to make the choices that they made in life.
100 Black Men of Albany and Girls Inc. of Albany, GA will hold separate male and female only forums that will focus on making wise decisions regarding abstinence, dating and relationships, and assertive and effective communication.
The Dream Summit would not be possible without the generosity of many businesses and organizations that generously support this event annually. Dream Summit has been generously funded by the United Way of Southwest Georgia, Publix, and Sam’s Club. Also sponsoring this event are LifeLink of Georgia and Amerigroup Solutions. Participating organizations include Girls Inc. of Albany, GA, 100 Black Men of Albany, GA, Dougherty Co. Sheriff’s Department, MoneyWorks Financial, 23 Books, PM Productions and Larger than Life Creative Group.
