AMERICUS, GEORGIA- Freshman Artisha Holston scored a game-high 23 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Albany State Lady Rams past the Columbus State Lady Cougars 71-69 in overtime at the Peach Belt-SIAC Challenge. With the win, ASU improves to 4-1 on the season. The Lady Cougars suffered their first loss of the season and are now 4-1.
The first 10 minutes of the game was a back-and-forth contest. The two teams were tied at 15-15 at the 9:45 mark. CSU went on a 16-5 run over the next six minutes to take a 31-20 with 3:26 left before halftime. However, the Lady Rams ended the half on an 11-2 run and only trailed 33-31 at intermission.
The Lady Cougars jumped out to a 44-33 lead during the first four minutes of the second half and were in control for most of the stanza. Despite the deficit, Albany State would make another key run.
With 4:15 left in regulation, Holston scored to ignite an 8-0 run that would put the Lady Rams ahead 63-59 with 1:28 left. CSU was able to capitalize on two Albany State turnovers to tie the score at 63 with 32 seconds remaining in the second half. The Lady Rams were unable to score a basket as time expired.
In the extra session, Holston put Albany State up by one, 70-69, with 20 seconds left in the game. After an offensive foul by CSU, guard Mecca Frost was fouled with eight seconds on the clock. She made one of two free throws to give the Lady Rams a 71-69 lead. The Lady Cougars’ final attempt at the buzzer fell short.
Keidra Green recorded 15 points and nine rebounds and Frost added 11 points and seven assists.
The Lady Rams return to action on Wednesday, December 11th against the same Columbus State team in ASU’s HPER Gym. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
