ALBANY – Although the Cavaliers won five of 10 matches, Brewton Parker came back late in the evening, Wednesday, to win 20-19 in an intense collegiate wrestling dual at Darton.
Up through the 174-lb. weight classes the Cavaliers led 19-9, but Brewton managed to pull away in the heavier weight classes. Darton was up 19-14 until the final matchup, when Brewton’s heavyweight Kenny Mason pinned Darton’s Jesse Rowlan to score six points and capture the team win.
But what a night it was in the Cavalier Arena, where a large crowd of students, faculty and general public cheered on a competitive meet.
Darton’s Quintin Noel, wrestling at 125 lbs., kicked the evening off with a 7-2 decision over Immanuel Henderson.
Brewton came back with Will Hale, who pinned 133-pounder Scott Coleman to take a 6-3 lead over Darton.
The lead changed six times over the dual, but nothing got the crowd more fired up than Darton’s Orlando Nawade. Nawade, wrestling at 157 lbs., won by an 11-3 major desiscion over Jake Johnson and put Darton back into a position to win.
Darton’s Matt Carroll and Emory Searles also won their 165 and 174-lb matches, respectively. Carroll won with an 8-2 decision over Heath McGregor, and Searles won by a pin over Brewton’s Zack Pitt.
The Cavaliers will be back in action Saturday at the Newberry Duals in South Carolina. Darton will face Newberry College, UNC Pembroke, Coker, Limestone and Lake Eerie at the event.
