Newberry, S.C. – Darton struggled at the Newberry College Duals, Saturday, going 0-5 with some of the NCAA’s best Div. 2 wrestling programs.
Hosts Newberry College swept the Cavaliers 58-0 in the first round.
“That threw us off for the whole day,” Darton head wrestling coach James Hicks said. “We never recovered.”
Darton then fell to UNC Pembroke 32-12 in round two, to Coker 27-13 in round three, to Limestone 33-12 in round four and to Lake Erie 40-6 in round five.
Darton’s Orlando Nawade was the only Cavalier wrestler to get a winning record Saturday. His only losses came to nationally-ranked, NCAA D2 wrestlers as he went 3-2.
But Darton had six of its other starters out of the meet.
“They’re injured, and some stayed home to focus on grades and get ready for finals, so we didn’t have our full team,” Hicks said.
However Hicks plans to be back in action in January when the Cavaliers travel to Campbellsville, Ky., for a dual meet at his alma mater, Campbellsville University.
“We got embarrassed at Karl’s (Reed, Darton assistant wrestling coach) alma mater Saturday,” he said. “That’s not going to happen at my alma mater. We’ll be healthy and ready to wrestle in January.”
