Cairo, GA (December 2, 2013) – Historic downtown Cairo lights up southwest Georgia with the Christmas “Joys of Christmas Toys” parade, Christmas Follies variety show, Syrupmaker Band concert, Cairo High School Chorus holiday concert, children’s photos with the Elves at the Roddenbery Memorial Library and special promotions and sales with the downtown merchants.
On Thursday, December 5, downtown Cairo comes to life at 7 p.m. under the time-honored canopy of Christmas lights with the annual Cairo Christmas Parade hosted by the Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce and area merchants. “The Joys of Christmas Toys” parade showcases holiday-themed floats, marching bands, antique cars, horses, and Santa Claus as they make their way down Broad Street. Stop by Roddenbery Memorial Library before the Christmas Parade from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and, for a small fee, the Friends of the Library will take you or your child’s picture with a Christmas Elf.
The festivities continue on Friday, December 6 and Saturday, December 7, when the Syrup City Players present their 3rd Annual Cairo Christmas Follies at the historic Zebulon Theater. This old-fashioned community celebration of the holidays features local singing groups, soloists, musicians, dancers and actors in a fun variety show format. Both shows will start at 7:30 p.m. with a special children’s matinee presented by Grady County Young Life on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for seniors and students if purchased in advance at Miss Myrt’s and Center Drugs.
Shop and dine local throughout the entire month of December as the downtown merchants get into the holiday gift spirit with special promotions, sales and drawings for prizes. Stroll through the shops for the perfect stocking stuffers and that special gift…jewelry, electronics, fashion, furniture, outdoor gear, sporting goods, kitchen wares, home decor, beauty products, and much more.
Enjoy the sounds of Christmas season as the Cairo High School Syrupmaker Band performs a concert at the Cairo High School auditorium on Sunday, December 8 at 2:30 p.m. The weekend’s events wrap up with a holiday concert by the Cairo High School Chorus on Monday, December 9 at 7 p.m. For more information call 229-377-2222.
