ALBANY – The Darton State College Lady Cavaliers beat Middle Georgia College 5-1 in the Region 17 semi-final today, and secured an opportunity to defend their Region title in Sunday’s final game.
Lady Warrior defenders were all over Darton’s star forward, Lyana Cambell, but they just couldn’t keep her at bay. The Peruvian freshman scored a hat trick before it was all over and is now ranked No. 3 in the NJCAA with 36 goals in 19 games.
It was Shanese Bowen who started the onslaught though. The freshman midfielder punched a neat goal into Middle’s net 20 minutes into play. Perez netted one shortly after to put Darton up 2-0 at the half.
Ten minutes into the second half, the Lady Cavalier defense lapsed and allowed Middle Georgia’s only goal. It seemed to rally Darton, whose offense kept at the Lady Warriors’ net until Perez scored two more and freshman Abby Ingram hammered a fifth goal though the gloves of a diving ‘keeper.
The win puts No. 4 Darton into the championship final at noon, Sunday, with No. 7 Georgia Perimeter College.
Perimeter beat Georgia Military College 5-1 in the semis today. The Lady Jaguars will enter the final with a 13-1 conference record. Darton will also take the field with a 13-1 conference record tomorrow. Each team’s only defeat came at the hands of each other, which should make for an exciting matchup on Sunday.
