The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in Folkston, Ga. is offering guided walks on the newly rebuilt Chesser Island Boardwalk as part of its December Saturday Program schedule.
December 7 and 14 – 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
December 21 – 10:00 a.m.
Take a one-hour nature walk down the Chesser Island Boardwalk to gain insights into the role of fire in the Okefenokee Swamp, and how wildlife actually benefits from it. Learn about the plants and animals that inhabit the swamp, and how they contribute to a balanced ecosystem. Binoculars will be available on loan. Meet at the Chesser Boardwalk Parking Lot.
Two other programs will be available on demand on Saturdays, depending on staffing, at the Visitor Center.
The Special Bird of the Okefenokee – Learn about the unique requirements of the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker.
Gator Gossip – Without alligators, the Okefenokee Swamp wouldn’t be the same. Come learn some interesting facts about the Swamp’s most sought-after resident.
In addition, the annual Christmas on Chesser Island will be held on Saturday, December 14, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Okefenokee Wildlife League (OWL), the festival will showcase the homestead transformed into a storybook setting with traditional homemade decorations and luminaries. Stay warm by the bonfire while enjoying homemade cookies, hot chocolate, and cider. Join the Roddenberry Sisters in singing Christmas carols.
