FRANKLIN SPRINGS – The Darton State College Cavaliers swam circles around Emmanuel College, Saturday, taking a 128-70 win in a dual meet in Franklin Springs while the Lady Cavs were a mere 4 points shy of a win as they fell 93.5-90.5.
“Our guys had some good races out there,” said Darton head swim coach Will Breehl. “We were able to get out hand on the wall in a lot of the close ones.”
Sophomore JD Rousseau swam a 16:41 in the 1650 to win and post the second-best time in the NJCAA. He also won the 500 in 4:52.
Gabe Downey won the 400 backstroke in 54:56 to post the No. 5 time in the league. Matt Martin, Matt Weiss, Draven Barcia and Frank Bruechner all won their respective events of the 200 free, 50 free, 100 free and 100 breaststroke.
Darton’s relay teams swept the 200 medley and 800 free events.
On the women’s side, Ashely Delgado won the 200 free (tie) and the 100 free. Sarah Hoop, who holds a gold medal from the 2013 diving championship, won the 50 free and the 100 breaststroke, and ranked No. 5 nationally in both events.
“We wanted to win on the women’s side,” Breehl said. “It was a very close meet, so it’s hard to lose those, but we had some really encouraging swims to let us know we are getting in better shape.”
Darton will travel next to Brenau University’s inviational in Gainesville, Friday.
