Special to the Journal

Albany Area Arts Council proudly presents Pottery and Paintings exhibition by professional artist Kirby Gregory. The Arts Council will showcase the work of local potter Kirby Gregory for the month of September. The exhibit runs September 6th through the 27th with an opening reception on September 5th from 6-8pm.

An avid art enthusiast and community advocate throughout Southwest Georgia, Kirby is a familiar artist to most here in Albany. He serves on the Board of Directors at the Albany Area Arts Council and is a participant of Empty Bowls. He is a frequent exhibitor and pottery instructor. He teaches individuals and groups as well as provides demonstrations to community organizations upon request. Presently, he is teaching school age children clay work using the potter’s wheel and by hand building for Project Impact in Apalachicola, Florida. The Bowery Gallery in Apalachicola represents his work. He will be leading a workshop making and firing Raku at the Bowery Gallery in October.

Kirby, a native Albanian, earned his Bachelor’s in Ceramics from Georgia Southwestern University. Originally a graphics major focusing on photo-etching and stone lithography, he switched to study ceramics with Professor Ralph Harvey. Kirby has been working with ceramics for many years making porcelain, earthenware and stoneware. Currently, Kirby makes functional pottery- all his work is food, microwavable and dishwasher safe. He uses a propane fueled car kiln to fire his pieces to cone 10-11, roughly 2400 degrees F. This exhibit will also include his paintings. Kirby’s paintings are focused on pots or their surfaces. Materials include compressed chalk, oil pastels, ink, graphite and polyurethane on canvas. They are sketches to think through issues making pottery. Occasionally he will make the sketch after making the pots to develop the thoughts going into the piece.

The Albany Area Arts Council is located in the historic Carnegie Library, 215 North Jackson St., Albany, Georgia. The gallery is open Monday through Friday 10am to 4pm. The Albany Area Arts Council serves as the umbrella organization for seven art agencies and is devoted to promoting the arts in the greater Albany area.
