Freshman Kristen Randolph recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs to lead the Albany State to a 3-2 comeback victory over defending SIAC champion Clark Atlanta University. With the pulsating win, the Lady Rams improve to 6-6, 5-1 in the SIAC. Clark Atlanta falls to 8-2, 5-2.
Albany State had to engage in an uphill battle to pull out a win in the rematch of the 2012 SIAC championship game. The Lady Rams led Game 1 early, but Clark Atlanta was able to tie the score at 15 and then took a 21-20 lead. ASU was able to tie the game at 25 before falling 27-25. In Game 2, Albany State trailed the entire game and wound up dropping the contest 25-20.
CAU came into Game 3 with a 2-0 match lead and all the momentum until the Lady Rams showed that they were still contenders. Feeding from the energy of the 2500 rowdy ASU fans in attendance, Albany State capitalized on an early 12-7 lead and won Game 3 25-16. The Lady Rams followed that stand with a 25-18 win in Game 4 to force a final set.
ASU took a 6-5 lead in the fifth game, but Clark Atlanta answered with six straight points to claim an 11-6 advantage, and seemingly had Albany State on the ropes. However, led Randolph’s three late kills, the Lady Rams made one final run. Randolph gave Albany State the lead at 14-13, and setter Amanda Cook closed the game out with another kill to give Albany State a 15-13 win.
Jillian Anderson added 11 kills and five digs for Albany State. Ashley Johnson had nine kills and 16 digs. Cook recorded seven kills, a whopping 40 assists and nine digs from her setter’s position.
