AMERICUS – The Cavaliers finished 6th at the Remembrance Run hosted by Georgia Southwestern State University, Saturday.
Darton, the only NJCAA cross country program at the meet, scored 147 points among a pool of nine teams.
Freshman Austin Steward led the Cavalier effort. He averaged 5:29-minute miles to finish the men’s 8K in 27:13.95.
Freshmen David Thornton ran 27:54 (26th), Victor Chicas ran 28:16 (31st), Jose Bautista ran 28:28 (37th) and sophomore Ean Crawford 28:32 (39th) to sum Darton’s score.
The Cavaliers packed well and ran a team average 28:04 8K.
Darton was also represented well by its former athletes Saturday. Cody Mallchok, who transferred from Darton to Columbus State this fall, finished among the top ten by blazing a 26:50 8K. And the race was directed by GSW head coach Brittney Skiles, who won Darton’s first individual conference championship in 2007.
NCAA D-2 program Georgia Regents University won the race with 33 points. The Jaguars averaged a 26:27.12 8K.

The Cavaliers will head to Pensacola, Fla., Saturday for the Gulf Coast Stampede.
The Lady Cavaliers finished 8th among 12 teams at the GSW Remembrance Run, Saturday in Americus.
Darton averaged a 26:34 6K and scored 249 points. The Lady Cavs, many of whom had never raced the 6,000-meter distance since the NJCAA competes in a 5,000-meter run, packed together well and finished 38th, 44th, 51st, 55th and 61st.
Sophomore Elena Oslund again led the program. She finished in 25:32 and averaged a 6:51 mile pace. She was followed by Alexis Skiles (25:53), Amber Braswell (26:30), Jaichelle Thomas (26:54) and Kaitlyn Winter (28:02).
NCAA D-2 program Columbus State won the race with 43 points.
The Lady Cavaliers will travel to Pensacola, Saturday, for the University of West Florida’s Gulf Coast Stampede.
