ALBANY – The Darton State College Cavaliers shutout Andrew College, 7-0, at home Tuesday, and held onto their No. 5 ranking in the NJCAA poll released today.

The Cavaliers’ win over Andrew improved Darton to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

“We played poorly in the first half but we still found ways to score,” said Darton head soccer coach Bart Sasnett, whose Cavaliers scored three goals before halftime. “In the second half we were very consistent. It was as good a soccer as we’ve played all year.”

Cavalier forward Darwin Espinal, a freshman, scored two goals and now, totaling 17 goals so far, is the top goal-scorer in the NJCAA. He also leads the nation with 39 offensive points.

Sophomore midfielder Jorge Chirinos scored a goal and gave an assist. His total of 9 assists ranks as No. 2 in the NJCAA.
Alejandro Garcia had an assistant and aggressively scored a goal despite a late tackle that left him sidelined for the final 70 minutes of the match. Da’vid Lazarof scored on a penalty kick and Cole Guertin and Santiago Unigarro scored a goal apiece.

Darton will travel to the Georgia Perimeter Campus in Dunwoody to play Jefferson College, Saturday, at 2 p.m.

“They’re a good team from Missouri that was in the national championship last year,” Sasnett said. “They’re nationally ranked and I think they’re going to be a good match.”
