Albany, Ga. – Construction work could soon begin on the interchange reconstruction and resurfacing of State Route (SR) 3 in Dougherty County. Georgia DOT has just awarded a contract to Oxford Construction Company of Palmyra Road in Albany valued at close to $12.5 million.

This project proposes to reconfigure the SR 3/Liberty Expressway interchange at North Jefferson Street. This includes relocating the westbound exit and entrance ramps directly across from Philema Road creating a four-legged intersection. The new entrance ramps will require a new bridge over the Central of Georgia Railroad (CGR) and a new bridge over North Jefferson Street. Removal of the existing SR 3/Liberty Expressway westbound entrance loop ramp from North Jefferson Street as well as the existing SR 3/Liberty Expressway westbound exit ramp to northbound North Jefferson Street. Widening North Jefferson Street from the SR 3/Liberty Expressway Bridge to Philema Road; consisting of adding left turn lanes at the Philema Road / North Jefferson Street intersection; adding a second right turn lane on northbound North Jefferson Street to Philema Road, adding sidewalks, a raised median and bike lanes to North Jefferson Street.

Work is tentatively scheduled to begin September 16. On this date, the Contractor will be closing the Park and Ride lot located at the intersection of Jefferson Street and Philema Road for the duration of the project. A new Park and Ride lot will be constructed as part of this project. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of December 2015, at a construction cost of $12,485,918. Information on construction and lane closure schedules on this project will be forthcoming before work begins.
