ASU Students to Participate in March on Washington Celebration

ALBANY- This weekend thousands will travel to the U.S. Capitol to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington. Four members of the ASU Student Government Association Advisory Board will be among the masses to honor the historical event.

Officials from the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education reached out to ASU inviting students to participate in the commemoration of the 1963 March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech Aug. 22 through Aug. 24.

Gernisha Pernell, Kevious Bass, Robert Robinson, and Chanel Moore of the Student Government Association were selected to represent ASU in Washington D.C. during the celebration. Mashunda Mobley, of Student Life and Activities will accompany the students as the advisor.

NAFEO is utilizing the 50th Anniversary, of the March on Washington to emphasize the need to repair current student financial aid issues and ultimately make a college education attainable for students.

On Aug. 22 and 23 students will participate in youth mass meetings, pre-march rallies, teach-ins, and a Town Hall meeting on the Voting Rights Act. The March for “Freedom, Jobs, Peace and Social Justice”, led by Martin Luther King III will be held Aug. 24.

“I’m looking forward to traveling to Washington D.C., visiting the MLK Memorial, and being in the presence of leaders from the Civil Rights Movement,” stated SGA Vice President of Fiscal Affairs, Gernisha Pernell.
The group left for Washington Aug. 22 and will return Aug. 25. Students from Fort Valley State University, Columbus State University and Savannah State University are also attending the event.
