In recognition of June as Internet Safety Month, Attorney General Sam Olens has unveiled a Public Service Announcement (PSA) in cooperation with Facebook entitled, “What You Can Do to Control Your Information.” The PSA featuring Attorney General Olens and Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg addresses top questions about privacy, bullying prevention, and general Internet safety.

“In this digital age that we live in, it is vital that teenagers understand how to protect themselves on the Internet,” said Attorney General Sam Olens. “Our young people today are fortunate to have the advantage of exploring the world at their finger tips through the Internet, but they must be aware of the risks involved and take steps to ensure online privacy and security.”

The PSA provides teenagers and parents with tips and resources to better manage what information they share – and with whom they share it – both on Facebook and more broadly on the Internet. The awareness effort also includes a privacy tip sheet and an “Ask the Safety Team” video series in which Facebook will answer consumers’ questions. Both can be found at www.facebook.com/fbsafety and on Attorney General Olens’ Facebook page. Although the awareness campaign targets young people, the online privacy resources can be utilized by all consumers.

Olens added, “I encourage all parents to discuss Internet safety with their children. While the Internet has become an indispensible part of our lives, we cannot forget that it poses risks for our children.”
