LOCUST GROVE, Ga The Darton State College Lady Cavaliers will enter the 2013 NJCAA Region 17 Softball Championship, at 7 p.m., Thursday, as the No. 2 seed at Strong Rock Christian School in Locust Grove.

Darton will play the winner of a first-round match between No. 3-seed Middle Georgia College and No. 6-seed Gordon State College. A win would advance Darton to the quarterfinals, where they’d likely face No. 1-seed Georgia Perimeter College.

“It’s up in the air though, really,” Darton head softball coach David Dews said. “East Georgia has a really good team and ABAC probably has the best pitcher around. Then there’s Perimeter who’s the number one seed. Anybody can beat anybody in this tournament.

“We’re just going to have to play real well.”

Darton swept West Georgia Technical College with two shutouts on Monday after splitting a doubleheader at Georgia Perimeter two days earlier. The Lady Cavs finished 12-4 in the conference and have a 3-game winning streak going into the tournament.

Middle Georgia, whom Darton beat 3 out of 4 games, is 12-4 and Gordon enters the tournament 7-9 in conference play. They’re 1-1 with the Lady Cavs.

“Both teams are really good teams, but Middle is really hot right now,” Dews said. “We’re just hoping to go in there and play to our capabilities and we’ll see what happens.”
