ALBANY, Ga – The Darton State College Lady Cavaliers beat local rival Albany Technical College, 65-46, in Region 17 women’s hoops action, Wednesday, in the Cavalier Arena in Albany.
The lopsided win followed news of Darton’s latest NJCAA ranking – No. 13 in today’s polls – which is the best the program has seen in at least a decade. The Lady Cavaliers are now 24-3 and 15-2 in conference play. Now with 12 games in the Cavalier Arena behind them, the program is still undefeated at home. And, probably best of all, Darton is still the top team in the conference.
The sophomores showed their seasoned prowess tonight by scoring 47 of the team’s 65 points. Forward Chanteniece Fann was responsible for most of them. She hit 6 of 9 attempted field goals and sunk 7 of 8 free-throws for a total of 19 points. Fann led the team in rebounds tonight too with 9.
And sophomore Michelle Mitchell was good for 16 points and 7 rebounds while post-player Crystal Reed came off the bench to score 12 points and fight for 8 rebounds in only 12 minutes of play.
Freshman Jasmine Wilson could be considered the engine that drove the team to another big win, as she put 37 minutes on the floor and led the game in assists with 10.
The Lady Cavs will take a week off of competition before they finish their regular season schedule. They’ll host East Georgia Technical College at 6 p.m., Wednesday, and wrap up with a home game against Georgia Highlands on Feb. 23, at 2 p.m.
