ALBANY, Ga – The 26th Annual Darton State College MATHCOUNTS competition was held this past Saturday, February 2, with four area middle schools participating. The schools were invited to bring their top mathletes to go head-to-head in competition withother mathletes.

During the four-hour event, teams and individuals competed for top honors and awards including graphing calculators and trophies. The competition began at 9 a.m. with a fast-paced Sprint Round. During this round, students had 40 minutes to complete 30 problems. Participants then moved to the Target Round, which involved some of the most difficult problems of the competition. Participants were given 32 minutes to complete eight questions. School teams also competed during a Team Round. Results from these first three rounds determined participants for the Countdown Round.

Schools sending sixth, seventh and eighth grade teams to participate in the tournament included Merry Acres Middle School, Robert A.Cross Middle Magnet School, Sherwood Christian Academy, and Lee County Middle School.

The annual tournament was part of a national tournament sponsored by the Society of Professional Engineers. The DartonCollege Foundation was the local sponsor along with the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers. The tournament was very competitive and included a mix of public and private schools. MATHCOUNTS is held to interest students in pursuing mathematical and technical careers.

The individual high scorer was Saloni Patel from Merry Acres Middle School and he received a trophy. The countdown winner was Emma Keaton from Lee County Middle School and she received a trophy.

Each team member from the winning school, Merry Acres Middle School, received a TI-84 Plus graphing calculator and a trophy. A plaque was also presented to the team coach, Tracy Stolze. The second place team, Sherwood Christian Academy, received a trophy for each team member and a plaque for the coach, Matthew Sweet. The third place team, Lee County Middle School, received a trophy for each teammember and a plaque for the coaches, Debra Price and Janet Mock.

The team from Merry Acres Middle School will compete in the State MATHCOUNTS competition held in Atlanta. The team members representing Merry Acres Middle School are Jarret Smith, Mary Rachel Bonner, John Hatcher, and Byron Williams. The top three high scorers not included on the winning team will also participate in the stateMATHCOUNTS competition. They are Saloni Patel from Merry Acres Middle School, Emma Keaton from Lee County Middle, and Dylan Holland from Merry Acres Middle.
