Marianna, Fla. - Darton State College shut the door early on No. 20-ranked Chipola College, capturing a 12-2 victory on Tuesday in Marianna, Fla.
With seven runs in the first three innings, the Cavaliers left no doubt about the eventual outcome.A sacrifice fly by Kyle Conkle, a passed ball, and a sacrifice fly by Cody Wofford opened the scoring in the first inning. Then after back-to-back singles by Casey James and Brandon Sharpe, another passed ball during the second inning fueled the Cavaliers’ offense early.
The attack continued when the Cavs tacked on another three runs in the third. The inning got off to a hot start when James singled, scoring Wofford and Kody Adams. That was followed up by Ventavis Jerger’s single, bringing home James.
Darton State added four more runs in the top of the ninth. A bases loaded walk scored Adams to open the scoring in the frame. That was followed up by Riliani Familia’s single, bringing home James and Trey Haygood.
James and Familia both racked up two RBI on two hits. James scored three times. Wofford was 3-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Adams and Sharpe added two hits apiece.
The Cavaliers got the win thanks in large part to A.J. Sunstrom’s dominant, eight-strikeout performance. Sunstrom allowed one earned run, five hits and one walk over seven innings.
Darton State(8-4) travels to Florence, S.C., on Friday to begin play in the Pepsi Invitational. The Cavaliers will face Florence-Darlington Tech at 6 p.m., Friday.
