Pierotti, a native of Utah has been coming to Shellman, Georgia to paint since the late 1980s. He is recognized internationally for his paintings and designs. Over 700 of his works are housed in over 250 private, corporate and public collections throughout the world. He began his professional painting career in 1963 following graduation from La Sorbonne in Paris and the University of Utah’s Department of Fine Arts. Trained primarily as a classical composer he began painting and drawing, as a child, in his grandfather’s sculpture studio located on the family’s Utah farm. His move to New York City, following university studies, inclined him towards painting rather than a career in music. However the influence of musical compositional structure has always played heavily in his visual art. Instrumental voicing in a suite of musical compositions mirrors his approach to serial or suite-like painting. He will follow a theme or idea through a number of similar yet unique paintings. At times each work is to be viewed as an individual work, at others the paintings are to be viewed as a Suite. Both structural forms will be on view. Though he works on linen or cotton canvas and paper, only paintings on paper will be shown at this time. For additional information about his work go to: www.raypierotti.com
During the exhibition, running from 02/10-04/21, Pierotti will lecture and demonstrate his multi-layering process. Dates for these free and open to the public events are to be announced.
On paper he utilizes three mediums which are used to build up a dense visual language. Sometimes the language is representational at others symbolic and abstract. In music this approach would be called voicing or orchestration. On paper Pierotti multi-layers soft pastel, acrylic paint and color pencil. There are often upwards of 15-20 layers of each of these mediums in one work. Pierotti thinks of his visual language as his personalized voice. Like his physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual development, over time, this voice has come to make his artistic expression unique. He, like his life partner who is an energetic healer, believes that the Arts are essential to an individual’s sense of well being.
