Albany, Ga. –Theatre Albany has announced that it will conduct auditions for the play “The Member of the Wedding” Saturday, November 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the theatre located at 514 Pine Avenue.
Written with compassion, veracity and wit by Columbus native, Carson McCullers, “The Member of the Wedding” depicts the intrinsically enmeshed lives of whites and blacks in the American South. Twelve-year-old tomboy Frankie Addams, falls deeply in love with her older brother and his fiancé. Exhilarated by her naive conviction that being a member of their wedding means she will become what she calls the “we of me,” Frankie is devastated when she learns she is not invited on the honeymoon. Bernice Sadie Brown, who has experienced a lifetime of love and loss, is a surrogate mother for Frankie.
The play, which was adapted from McCullers highly acclaimed novel, opened on Broadway in 1950 and featured Julie Harris, Ethel Waters and Brandon deWilde and won the New York Drama Critics Award as Best Play. It was later became a successful film with Harris, Waters and deWilde reprising their roles.
Director Mark Costello is looking to cast six males (two African-American and) and seven females (two African-American). The primary roles are Frankie, Berenice and John Henry. Frankie is 12 year-old but needs to be played by an older, mature actress who plays young. Berenice is the Addams’ African-American house keeper and surrogate mother. Rehearsals are set to begin in December and break for the holidays and resume in January. Performances scheduled for January 31 thru February 10.
