ALBANY – Darton State College, the No. 1 seed entering the 2012 NJCAA D-1 Men’s Soccer Championship, will face No. 12 seed Western Wyoming Community College as the championship begins Monday at Darton.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and it will be the last of four matches of pool play scheduled Monday.

The new tournament format consists of four pools that are composed of three teams. Pool play runs Monday through Wednesday of the tournament, with the winners of each pool advancing to the semi-final round.

Western Wyoming enters the tournament with a 14-9 record and although they received votes, the Mustangs are not ranked among the NJCAA’s top 20. But they tied No. 19 Laramie County Community College in a Region 9 semi-final before beating No. 18 Northwest College 2-1 in the Region’s final game. They average three goals per game and allow an average of 1.5 goals against.

The Cavaliers, on the other hand, are an undefeated 17-0. Their latest win was a 2-1 conference battle with No. 17 South Georgia College on Oct. 28.

Regardless of the outcome Monday, the Cavaliers will play No. 8 seed Western Texas College at noon, Wednesday, as pool play continues. The Westerners moved up from 14th to 11th in the NJCAA soccer poll released today. They’re 11-2 and beat No. 7-ranked Barton Community College to earn a national championship berth.

The final four teams remaining after pool play ends on Wednesday will enter one of two semi-final rounds Friday, Nov. 16. The championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 17.
