Election day is now less than a month away. Reasonable people can find good reasons to vote for either President Obama or Mitt Romney. Pointing out the faults of the candidate you don’t support is fine. Healthy political debate is a good thing, but sometimes it can go too far.
Here’s an example. An Albany man put up these banners outside his business. They say “the Seals removed one threat to America. Remove the other in November.”
Richard Thomas claims he’s not criticizing the President. He says the threat he’s talking about is political apathy, and he’s just trying to encourage people to vote.
What a load of baloney! We don’t buy that explanation. The sign is clearly insulting to the President. Some may even see it as a veiled threat, though Thomas insists it’s not. It certainly seems to equate President Obama to Osama Bin Laden. No matter what you think of the President, that’s just not fair.
Barack Obama is our commander in chief. And Mitt Romney is the Republican Presidential nominee. As such, both men deserve our respect, even if you don’t think they deserve your vote.
We agree with Mr. Thomas on one thing. Political apathy hurts our country, and we all need to vote next month. We just hope for a little civility until then.
