Martin finishes two under at River Point, wins second place at Darton Invitational

ALBANY Darton State College freshman Taylor Martin played some solid golf in all three of his rounds at the Darton Invitational tournament, finishing second overall and two-under par.

The Braselton native shot 72, 72 and 70 on the challenging River Point Golf Club course to finish only two strokes behind medalist Alex Mahlik of Central Alabama Community College.

“He’s a special one,” Darton head golf coach Bill Jones said of Martin. “He might be better than Joe was when he was a freshman (Joe Sakulpolphaisan – who, as a sophomore at Darton, lead the NJCAA for several months last season). He’s that good. He should have won this tournament.”

Overall the Cavaliers were 25-over par and finished third, shooting 300 and 287 in two rounds Monday before diving 14-over par Tuesday with 302 strokes.

TaeHyung Kim, who joined the Cavs from South Korea, had an outstanding day Monday, shooting an even 72 in the first round and then a 68 in the second to challenge the lead. An even par today would have been good enough to tie for the win, but the freshman struggled with the third round as he shot 13-over par (85) and fell to 15th place.

“He put himself in a bad spot early,” Jones said. “Then he had a two-stroke penalty on the fourth hole that hurt his momentum.”

Sophomore Nick Green finished well with an even par today, and moved up the boards to 13th. He shot 79, 73 and 72 to finish 8-over with 224 strokes.

Freshman Parks Brown dropped to 25th place, shooting 78, 74 and 78 and finishing 14 over.

Darton’s B team showed a lot of promise as well, led by Madison Turner who at two-over par finished 6th overall. Tyler Vaughn (T-15th) was nine-over, Neil Graham (T-20th) was 11-over and Robert Robertson (T-27th) was 16 over. The Darton B team finished fifth overall, and 38-over par with 902 strokes.

Central Alabama won the tournament, shooting 287, 282 and 292 to total 861 strokes and three-under par. Brevard Community College took second, shooting 287, 296 and 297 to score 880 strokes and 16-over par.

The Cavaliers are scheduled to travel to Pendleton, S.C., next for the District IV Preview at Boscobel Country Club on Oct. 22.
