(WEST POINT) – Darton State College freshman Alexis Skiles ran a 20:45 5K to lead the Lady Cavaliers cross country team to a 1stplace finish at the Point University Invitational race, Friday, in West Point.
Alexis finished 8th overall to rank among the top ten along with sophomore teammate Hayden Clapper, whose 21:05 5K placed her 10th overall.
Sophomore Jeronda Stringfield finished 13th overall (21:37), and freshmen Elena Oslund (21:47) and Daisha Ballard (21:52) finished 17th and 18th, respectively, to sum Darton’s team score of 66 points.
However SCAD Atlanta, led by Darton alumna Catherine Westerfield, also finished with 66 points. Darton’s 6th runner, Vanessa Pina, finished four places ahead of SCAD’s 6th finisher, giving Darton the win.
“That’s one of the things about cross country – you need all of your team to perform well,” Darton head coach Bruce Skiles said. “It was a very close race, and our girls ran hard and I’m very pleased with them today.”
Darton’s average time was 21:25.70; SCAD’s was 21:25.93. With 94 points, Georgia Southwestern State University finished 3rd and averaged a time of 22:02.
In the men’s collegiate 8K, Darton finished second to Morehouse College, 29-56. SCAD Atlanta finished third with 117 points.
Finishing 4th, 5th and 8th, Jared Richmond (27:31), Cody Mallchok (27:37) and Hank Campbell (28:15) all earned top ten honors for Darton.
Freshman Ean Crawford (29:16) finished 16th, followed by sophomore Luis Navarro (23rd, 29:45), to settle Darton’s score of 56 points.
