Lady Cavaliers blast Middle Georgia College, 6-1
Lady Cavaliers played like the defending GCAA Champions Thursday, drilling Middle Georgia College 6-1 at home.
Patience paid off for the Lady Cavs, who nearly left the first half scoreless before sophomore Deanna Reali was able to deflect a ball off of Middle Georgia defender to score only minutes before half time. Moments later a foul by the Warriors’ goalkeeper led to a penalty kick only two minutes before the half, which freshman Stephanie Anes quickly put away to give Darton a 2-0 lead before halftime.
Teammates congratulate Darton sophomore Chi Chi Hikita after scoring the Lady Cavs’ sixth goal against Middle Georgia College.
The Lady Cavs continued to attack in the second half, resulting in another goal for Anes, two goals for sophomore Kimberly Treutel and one for Chi Chi Hikita.
“We were ready to turn the corner and step everything up and I think tonight was it,” head women’s soccer coach Ken Veilands said. “We sent a signal out to people that we’re ready to play.”
The big win boosts Darton to 4-4 overall and 4-2 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association conference.
The Lady Cavs will travel to Atlanta to play GCAA rival Georgia Perimeter College, Monday. Darton fell 1-0 in their last matchup with Perimeter on Sept. 14, but it was the Lady Cavs’ fourth game in only six days, and tired legs seemed to have slowed their play.
“Tonight was the first time with a few days to rest, prepare and then come out fresh and play a quality team,” Veilands said. “We’re at a point in our schedule, our season, where we can do that now.”
