(ALBANY) – The Darton State College women’s and men’s teams placed 14th and 12th, respectively, in the NJCAA D-1 cross country polls released today.
These are the first polls of the 2012 cross country season, and Darton head cross country coach Bruce Skiles is pleased with his teams’ current positions, he said.
“I think we’re ahead of the game,” he said. “I’ve got to get a couple of my freshmen going, but I think we can reach our goal of top 10 by the end of the season.”
The women’s program welcomed a very talented freshman class including Skiles’ daughter, Alexis Skiles of Leesburg, Monroe graduate Destinee Collins of Albany, Elena Olsund of Henderson, N.C., Daisha Ballard of Marietta, Jaichelle Thomas of Bonaire, and Kaitlyn Winter of LaFayette.
Returning sophomores are Lee County High graduate Vanessa Pina, Taylor Hall of Springfield, Hayden Clapper of Oviedo, Fla., and Jeronda Stringfield of Pensacola, Fla.
New to the men’s team are Brantley Easom of Americus, Jared Richmond of Woodstock, Ean Crawford of Bonaire, and Jordan Richey of McDonough.
Returning to the men’s squad is a tough sophomore class including Lee County graduate Cory Morris of Leesburg, Luis Navarro of Kennesaw, Hank Campbell of Guyton, Cody Mallchok of Woodstock, and Nick Mascardo of Pensacola, Fla.
Darton was the only team in the GCAA to place in the polls.
The program will travel to Clarksville Friday for the North Georgia Tech Invitational.
