(ALBANY) – Darton State College head men’s soccer coach Bart Sasnett wasn’t sure whether he should break the news before entering a GCAA match Wednesday with nearby rival Andrew College.
But before kickoff he broke the news – the NJCAA poll released today announced the Cavs as the No. 1 team in the nation.
“And I’m glad I did,” Sasnett said. “We came out and played the best soccer we’ve played all year so far.”
His Cavaliers shut out the Tigers 5-0, improving their undefeated overall record to 6-0 and 4-0 in conference play.
It’s hard to decide who lead the effort, but sophomore Andrew Palumbo was explosive as he scored a goal and assisted two goals to freshman-standout Alejandro Garcia.
Sophomore Jowayne Laidley scored two goals as well, assisted by teammates Troy Tucker and Seve Llama.
Indeed the Cavs have been playing the game like the nation’s best.
“They guys have worked hard for it, they really have,” Sasnett said
They’ll take a break from competition, but they’ll be back in action soon as they face Thomas University at 4 p.m., Sept. 11, at Thomasville.
Andrew Palumbo, a sophomore from Ft. Myers, Fla., explodes past an Andrew College defender Wednesday. Palumbo scored a goal and gave two assists as the Cavs shutout Andrew College, 5-0.
