(MACON) – The Darton State College men’s and women’s cross country programs finished 4th and 7th, respectively, at the 2012 Mercer Invitational at the Georgia Children’s Home in Macon.
With 121 points, the Cavaliers tied for third with Berry College before scorers looked to the teams’ sixth finishers. Still the Cavs finished strong among the 16-team pool, Darton cross country head coach Bruce Skiles said.
“My freshmen are coming on,” he said. “We’re getting stronger every week.”
Sophomore Cody Mallchok again led the Cavalier effort, finishing 8th overall in the men’s 8K race with a time of 26:54. Freshman Jared Richmond narrowly missed a top-ten spot among the 4-year college runners, placing 11th with 27:21. Sophomore Hank Campbell finished 27th with 28:32, Nick Mascardo finished 39th running 29:15, and Ean Crawford ran 29:32 to finish 44th as Darton’s fifth man. Sophomore Luis Navarro ran 30:29, finishing 65th overall.
Columbus State University won the men’s race with 28 points. SCAD Savannah finished second with 94 points.
In the women’s 5K race, Alexis Skiles finished in 20:45 to lead the Lady Cavaliers to a 7th place rank among the pool of 19 collegiate teams. Sophomores Hayden Clapper (21:12) and Jeronda Stringfield (21:25) finished 35th and 39th, respectively, while freshmen Elena Oslund (47th, 21:43) and Jaichelle Thomas (64th, 22:09) rounded up Darton’s score to 200 points.
Columbus State University won with 62 points, followed by Georgia College and State University (80 points) and SCAD Savannah (87 points).
The Darton program will travel to Carrolton for the University of West Georgia Invitational, Saturday.
