Special to the Journal
A Robins Airman will be presented a Bronze Star medal with valor device here Thursday at 2 p.m.
Col Joseph H. Scherrer, 689th Combat Communications Wing commander, will present the medal to Master Sgt. Gene B. Jameson III at a unit commander’s call in Robins’ south training area.
While deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 as the operations flight chief for the 455th Expeditionary Communications Squadron, Jameson directed heavy equipment efforts to combat a more than 5-acre fire caused by an insurgent rocket attack.
On his fourth trip into the compound, he discovered two crates of grenades and shoulder-launched missiles only 10 feet from advancing flames. His crisis leadership during the five-hour ordeal prevented the munitions from detonating and saved the lives of 50 personnel battling the blaze.
