The Lee County school system is going to take students from the Dougherty County, at least military ones. For those families who are going to get a chance to take advantage of this, I offer my congratulations. To the DCSS, who stands to lose associated funds for these students, I can only say, “You have only yourself to blame.”
This is the same school system that has been nothing but a complete train wreck since Dr. Joshua Murfree took over. This is the same school system that paid a reported $91,000 for a motivational speaker…and this during at time when teachers are being furloughed. This is the same school system that had the assistant superintendent tell the system’s police chief to clear arrests through the superintendent’s office.
The Dougherty County School System has been a disaster. It is the single greatest hurdle to attracting new businesses of anything in this community. The DCSS isn’t capable of producing the educated workforce that many employers are looking for, and companies looking to relocate don’t want their executive’s kids subjected to a school system like this.
Talks between MCLB Albany and Lee County School System officials could be seen by some as a betrayal of Albany, but it shouldn’t be. In fact, I actually hope Lee County will open up the possibility of more Dougherty County residents being able to send their children to the school system for a fee.
Should Lee County do this, it may actually stop much of the exodus we currently see as people flee Dougherty for the better school system in our neighbor to the north. We can have our children educated by a top notch school system, and the cost would most likely be less than a top notch private school would be.
The truth is that we need whatever options we can get. We are desperate here in Albany. We need something to happen, or else this town will never recover. Our school system must be the basis for that. Since it isn’t, MCLB Albany looked elsewhere. Frankly, the DCSS has no one to blame but themselves.
