Darton XC to host invitational Saturday, family style

(ALBANY) – Saturday at 8 a.m. Darton State College will kick off its annual Darton Cross Country Invitational, but this year it could just as easily be called a Skiles family reunion.

DSC freshman Alexis Skiles will race against Georgia Southwestern State University, whose women’s team is now coached by her sister and Darton alumna Brittney Skiles. Their brother, Darton alumnus Brandon Skiles, will compete in the men’s race as a senior member of the Columbus State University squad.

And head Darton College cross country coach Bruce Skiles, father of the trio, will be running the whole show as race director.

“It’s pretty neat.” he said. “It would be tough for me to lose tomorrow, wouldn’t it?” His wife, Terri, will also participate as a volunteer race marshal, so the entire family is involved.

But because of the flat, fast and spectator friendly course, it should be an exciting race for everyone. Teams from Columbus State University, Georgia Southwestern State University, Albany State University, South Georgia College and Tuskegee have entered the event to race the Cavaliers.

For many, if not all of the teams, this will be the first season race of 2012.

The event is free and open to the public. The race begins and ends near the Darton State College tennis pavilion. The men’s 8K race begins at 8 a.m., followed by the women’s 5K at 9 a.m.
