The Sherwood Christian Academy Eagles start the 2012 football season with the goal of improving on the 1-9 record they had last season. In speaking with coach Ottis Covington he is excited about the upcoming season and the way the program is progressing in just his second season as the head coach.

Coach Covington will have 5 seniors returning this season the rest of the roster will be filled by freshmen and sophomores.  At this time there are only 20 boys on that roster.

The Eagles will run a spread offense which will be directed by sophomore quarterback Darton Todd.  Coach Covington said that Todd played a lot last season, as the boy who played Q.B. was forced to stop playing due to concussions he suffered last year. The team has instituted new guidelines to be followed in cases where concussions may be involved. One of coach Covington’s concerns for this year is his offensive line and the fact that several boys have never played football before.

The Eagles will play a 3-4-4 defense this year which coach Covington feels will give the opportunity to use his team’s athleticism to the fullest. As the roster has only 20 boys this means almost all these boys will play both offense and defense. Changes in the association’s rules on practices before the season starts will limit the amount of practice time that teams will have to get ready for the upcoming season. It is yet to bee seen if this new rule will cause problems as the season progresses, will this bring about more injuries because boys are not able to get into playing shape.

Coach Covington says that the competition within the division has gotten better and his team is ready for the challenges of the upcoming season. The other teams had better be ready to face the Eagles as they have gotten better also and they will continue to do so well into the future due to the youth becoming better as they play more and age with in the program.

So this season will be an exciting one for the players, coaches and fans as well. Come out and support your Eagles as they play Iron man football this season and build to what the expect to be a bright future.
