So my wife posts on Facebook that she has been charged by a mother elephant protecting her baby. Why does she get all the fun? Good thing she was riding in a safari vehicle.
Communication is awful but she can hit a few times a day in some places. At least when we were missionaries in the 90’s, we had a satellite phone. We could call from anywhere to anywhere. The only catch was it was $10 a minute. There are only a couple of weeks left and she will be back.
I had mentioned in an earlier article that she was going to Africa to help teach American Cadets to teach Cadets from Burkina Faso English. I know she is doing a great job. She gets to hang out with all the Embassy crowd, yadda, yadda. But that elephant! That’s adventure! The crocodile in the wild was just a side show.
The most important thing she is doing is something she hadn’t even planned. She is reading the Bible to the Burkina Faso Cadets in French. She says they give her a round of applause when she finishes. They are French speakers and she knows French as well. She says that most of the Burkina Faso cadets identify themselves as Christian. God certainly moves in mysterious ways.
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”(Isaiah 55:9-11)
So now while an Islamist just won the presidential election in Egypt and Islam has caused chaos in Mali, our land of missionary service, Janice is reading the Word of God to Burkina Faso cadets in French, in an unofficial capacity, of course. While my family and I miss her, she is hitting the bull’s-eye. May they learn to speak English to the glory of God.
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you shall be My witness in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”(Acts 1:8) Janice lives a Spirit filled life. She is a witness to the love of Christ in our home. She is a witness to those of you who know her, both in Lee and Dougherty Counties. She is a witness to all of the many friends she has in North America, Europe and Africa.
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”(Matthew 5:14-16) When it comes to being a witness for Jesus, Janice is world-class. When it’s necessary, she even uses words.
