William Fred (Bill) Brooks Sr., 82

The funeral service of William Fred (Bill) Brooks Sr., 82, of Albany who died Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at Phoebe North Hospital, was conducted Saturday at Mathews Funeral Home.  Rev. Ralph Estes officiated.  Interment followed in Pinecrest Memory Gardens, Pelham, Ga.

A native of Pelham, Ga., Mr. Brooks had resided in Albany most of his adult life. He graduated from Pelham High School, attended business school in Atlanta and was an Army Veteran serving in Germany.

Mr. Brooks was a self made man and was one of the founders of Giles Builders Supply.  He was the former owner of Windsor and Summit Apartments and was a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Ann Brooks of Albany, a son, William Fred Brooks Jr. and his wife, Sherry of Lee Co., Ga., a daughter, Maria Brooks of Germany, two step-sons, Scott Baines and his wife, Dina of Leesburg, Ga. and Rick Baines and his wife, Pam of Carrolton, Ga., a grandchild, Laurence Brooks Hubbard and her husband, James of Lacey, Wash., two step-grandchildren, Brittany Yarbrough and Beth Baines both of Carrolton, Ga., and one step-great-grandchild, Wesley Yarbrough of Carrolton, Ga..

Robert J. (Bob) Merchant, 86

Robert J. (Bob) Merchant, 86, of Albany, Ga., died Thursday, March 1, 2012 at Willson Hospice House.  Funeral services were held Monday at Mathews Funeral Home.  Reverend Ron Holman officiated.  Committal services followed in the Blakely City Cemetery, the Reverend Ben Liggin officiated.

A native of Willacoochee, Ga., Mr. Merchant graduated from Willacoochee High School and served in the US Navy Air Corps during World War II.  Afterwards, he attended and graduated from The University of Georgia.

Mr. Merchant moved to Albany in 1948 and was one of the original or early partners of the CPA firms of Mauldin and Jenkins, Draffin and Tucker, Merchant and Henderson and Merchant, Sculley and Adair.  2012 marked his sixty year membership in the Georgia CPA Society.

Mr. Merchant served on the board of directors for Home Federal of Albany and was an associate director for Georgia Federal Bank for twelve years.  He was a member of the Salvation Army Board for several years and chaired the Building Committee for the Salvation Army’s Albany Chapel.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Albany and the Winsome Sunday School Class which included dear and devoted friends, John Watson and Joanne McClung.  Mr. Merchant was a long time contributor to the Albany Rescue Mission and past member of the Albany Lions Club and Radium Country Club.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Merchant of Albany, three sons, Randy Merchant and his wife, Nancy of Albany, Tim Merchant of Albany and Terry Merchant and his wife, Margaret of Leesburg nine grandchildren, Kelli and her husband, Rich of Buford, Joey of Savannah, Ashley and her husband Tim of Durango, Col., Katherine of Columbus, Bill of Macon, Keri of Albany, Michael, Andrew and Ryan all of Leesburg, five great-grandchildren, his sister, Ludell Vickers of Quincy, Fla. and several nieces, nephews and cousins who he dearly loved.  He was preceded in death by a son, Robby Merchant, a brother, Carroll Merchant and a sister, Mary Frances Liggin.

Agnes Grimes Smith

Agnes Grimes Smith of 230 Flowing Wells Road, died Saturday, March 3, 2012 the Dawson Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Her Funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at 11a.m. at the graveside in Floral Memory Gardens. Pastor Buddy Harris will officiate.

A native of Baker County, Mrs. Smith was a homemaker, a member of the Albany Christian Church and graduated from Albany High School in 1938. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Harrison Smith and a daughter-in law, Charleen Smith.

Survivors include a son, Danny Smith and his fiancé Mary Van of Albany, a son Michael Smith and his wife Janelle Ramsey Smith of Albany and two grandchildren Dalton and Kyle Smith.

The family will be at her residence, 230 Flowing Well Road and will receive friends Monday, 6 to 8 p.m.at Kimbrell-Stern.

Cecil Albert (C.A.) Brown, 79

Cecil Albert (C.A.) Brown, 79, of Albany died Friday March 2, 2012 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Brown was born in High Point, N.C., and was the only son of the late William Allen and Mae Douglas Brown of Statesville, N.C. He grew up on the family farm where he enjoyed hunting of all types and graduated from Central High School in 1952 in Statesville, N.C. His motto from his high school yearbook was, “If It Won’t Run, Push It!” He married his high school sweetheart Lona Dean McLelland in 1953. He was a firefighter for the Statesville, N.C. fire department and a driver for McLean Truck Lines, Winston Salem, N.C. In 1963, the family moved to Albany.

Mr. Brown served in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Montgomery, AL and eighteen months in Germany. As a member of the military police, he excelled in marksmanship. He was a driver for Trailways Bus Lines from 1962 to 1972 based out of Albany and was a member of the Trailways Retirement Club. In earlier years, Mr. Brown had obtained a NASCAR license and raced at Hickory Motor Speedway in Hickory, N.C. He continued to follow NASCAR racing and attended races at the Atlanta Motor Speedway and also followed the action on television. He was an excellent mechanic and worked on anything with an engine. Before his illness, he was in the process of restoring a Volkswagen Beetle at his home shop.

He and his son loved to hunt birds and enjoyed freshwater fishing and especially loved to fish for catfish and was an RV enthusiast. He spent many hours at his home shop tinkering with his RV. He and his wife enjoyed RV trips to Saddle Ridge Campground, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway in Sparta, N.C. and closer to home at Whispering Pines RV Park in Georgetown, Ga. He was a member of Dougherty Lodge # 591 F & A.M.

He deeply loved his two granddaughters and was always the first grandparent to the hospital when each was born. He spent time with them every week and had a practice of rewarding them for good grades.

In the late 1960’s he founded C.A. Brown Builders and later incorporated as C.A. Brown Construction, Co., Inc., a commercial general contractor. Mr. Brown started out by clearing land, dirt hauling and performing foundation work. Later he progressed to building custom and spec homes throughout Albany and Leesburg, Ga. area after completing drafting courses at what is now known as Albany Technical College. He later changed to a design build firm concentrating on commercial buildings. Over the years, he was involved in the design and construction of many retail, commercial, warehouse, church and office properties. He was involved in rental of homes and commercial facilities.

He was a long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church. His favorite type of music was Old Time Gospel. He especially enjoyed the friendship and support of his fellow members of his Men’s Sunday School Class.

Survivors include his wife, Lona McLelland Brown, Albany, a son and his wife, Jeffery  Cecil Brown and Millie Lowe Brown, Leesburg, Ga., two sisters, Susan Latchford, Winston-Salem, N.C. and Shirley Holder and her husband Bill, St Petersburg, Fla., two granddaughters, Caroline Anne Brown and Katie Douglas Brown of Athens, Ga.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church. Rev. Chip Gresham will officiate. Interment will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery with Masonic rites. The family will assemble at the home of the deceased. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Mathews Funeral Home.
