ASU Lady Rams’ 2012 track and field season off to great start

Three Albany State University Lady Rams took first-place honors in track and field events to highlight the opening of the 2012 outdoor season at the annual Eye Opener Meet, hosted by Savannah State University on Feb. 25. The Lady Rams, coached by Kenneth Taylor, took top honors in four categories in the women’s track and field events.

Freshman thrower CreeAnn Perkins captured two first place finishes in the shot put and discus throw to post top performances for the ASU Lady Rams. Perkins took top honors with a mark of 12.63 meters in the shot put and a distance of 38.97 meters in the discus throw.

Junior Brittany Dean finished in second place in the discus throw with a distance of 37.5 meters and took third place honors in the shot put with a mark of 11.41 meters.

Senior Brittany Carter took first place honors in the women’s 800-meter run with a time of 2:24.13, while two of her teammates, freshmen Olivia Traylor and Kanetria Kitchens finished in the top five. Traylor finished third with a time of 2:26.16 and Kitchens ran a time of 2:30.63 to finish fifth. Carter also finished second on the women’s 1500-meter run with a time of 5:00.15, followed by Traylor with a 5:11.01 time to finish in sixth place and Kitchens with a time of 5:23.05 for a ninth-place finish in the race.

Junior Sherrina Lewis finished first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.19 seconds, while sophomore teammate Irrion Conaler finished third in 16.08 seconds. The only Lady Ram to compete in the pole vault, sophomore Briana Bowles finished third after clearing 2.74 meters in the event.

ASU senior Jasmine Dalton rounded out the top 10 in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.33, while junior Ebony Stone finished in 1:02.34 for 13th place and Ambrosha Austin in 1:02.86 to finish 14th. Also competing was Asia Palmer, who finished 20th with a time of 1:04.41. Austin also took second-place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.49.

The ASU team of Austin, Carter, Conaler and Dalton finished second in the women’s 4 x 400-meter relay with a time of 4:04.27, behind Bethune-Cookman University, which finished with a time of 4:00.84.

Freshman Jasmine Grovenor, who was the only Lady Ram to complete in the 100-meter dash, finished eighth with a time of 12.83. She also finished 15th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.62, but was edged by freshman teammate Britney McBride who finished with a time of 26.57 for a 14th-place finish. Also competing in the event were Lewis and Dalton, who finished 22nd and 23rd with times of 27.41 and 27.42, respectively.

In addition to Albany State and Savannah State, seven other schools participated in the event, including Bethune-Cookman University, Edward Waters College, Mercer University, Savannah School of Art & Design, University of North Carolina-Pembroke, Clark-Atlanta University, and University of South Carolina-Beaufort.
The Lady Rams will compete at the annual Florida A&M University Relays on March 10.
