ASU Lady Ram earns SIAC softball honors for outstanding performances

An Albany State University Lady Ram has been selected for softball player of the week honors by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) after her outstanding performances in two weekend softball games. Freshman pitcher Chelsea Hicks earned SIAC East Division Softball Pitcher of the Week honors after leading the Lady Rams a victory and save against the Fort Valley State University Lady Wildcats on March 10.

The Marietta, Ga. native pitched eight innings, including a complete game shutout against the Lady Wildcats, with four strikeouts and just one walk in two appearances. The 5-5 right-hander finished with a 1-0 record and a save for the week, while giving up no earned runs. Hicks also recorded two hits and an RBI in the games.

Clark Atlanta University third baseman Nicolette Anderson was named SIAC’s East Division Player of the Week. Anderson, a native of Compton, Ca., went 18-for-26 with a homerun, two triples and seven doubles in six games, finishing the week with a .692 batting average and a 1.230 slugging percentage. The 5-foot-4 freshman scored nine runs and drove in four more while finishing with a .730 on-base percentage and a .950 fielding percentage. Anderson and the Lady Panthers finished the week with a 3-3 record, including victories over conference-foes Claflin and Paine.

Earning the SIAC West Division Player of the Week honor was Lane College infielder Diamond Moore, and Stillman College pitcher Ashley Savage was named SIAC West Division Pitcher of the Week. A Clarksville, Tenn. native, Moore also went 18-for-26 from the plate with three homeruns, four doubles and a triple in eight games, finishing with a .692 batting average and a 1.100 slugging percentage for the week. The 5-11 freshman had 19 RBI and scored 12 runs, while finishing with a .709 on-base percentage for the week, helping lead the Lady Dragons to a 6-2 record with two wins over Rust and four wins over conference-foe LeMoyne-Owen College.

Savage had strong week with 23 strikeouts and just two walks in 17 innings, including two complete games and a shutout, to earn her third weekly honor this season. The 5-foot-3 sophomore from Alabaster, Ala., finished with a 3-0 record, including wins against Lane and Tuskegee (twice), and a 0.82 ERA while holding hitters to a .154 batting average. On the season, Savage is 8-2 as a starter with a 3.31 ERA and 74 strikeouts.

Hicks and the Lady Rams will play at Alabama A&M University on March 14, before competing in the SIAC Cross-over Tournament in Jasper, Ala. on March 15-17.
