By now pretty much everyone has heard of the HCG diet and knows at least one person who has successfully lost weight using it. HCG stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin. It’s a hormone that’s only present in early pregnancy. Its function is to get the fertilized egg to implant in the uterus walls and grow a placenta so it can grow into a baby. It’s the same hormone that early pregnancy tests detect in high concentrations. Once the placenta is grown, the HCG production tapers off.
Some women get morning sickness during early pregnancy. That’s because they produce much more HCG than usual and they’re very sensitive to the hormone. The amount used for weight loss is much less than is present during a typical pregnancy, so it won’t make you feel nauseous, but it is enough to keep you from feeling hungry. That will enable you to follow a very low calorie diet.
How does it work?
There are three types of fat in the body. Structural fat surrounds the joints and organs. Normal or Essential fat is distributed evenly throughout the body and is used day to day as a source of energy. Abnormal, Secondary or Non-essential fat is the third kind and it happens to be the one we want to get rid of!
The problem with traditional diet and exercise weight loss programs is the “abnormal” fat is the last fat to be released by the body. It holds on to it for emergency reserve and only is released as a last resort. Unfortunately we lose the will power to continue and we give up!
HCG stimulates a part of the brain that is responsible for directing the storage and use of fat. This is called the diencephalon. Various factors, including genetics, endocrine disorders (hormone imbalance), and abrupt changes in either caloric intake or expenditure (pregnancy, prescription drugs) can disrupt the normal operation of the diencephalon. Taking HCG with a combination of a low calorie diet will reset this part of the brain and ultimately reset your body’s metabolism.
It was discovered in the 1940′s by Dr. Albert T.W. Simeons. HCG has been used for weight loss since the 1950′s. When HCG is present in your body the net effect is a chemical balance that keeps your metabolism out of starvation mode. That way the calories needed to make up for the diet come from the fat stored under your skin. That’s how women can lose a half pound to a pound a day, and men can lose one to two pounds per day.
